In LA with a few days to kill

I'm out on the left coast working on trying to get an animated series up and running. These things are always long shots, so it's far too early for me to go into any sort of detail. But you never get anywhere if you don't at least try. So some producing partners and I are making the rounds of Nickelodeon, Disney, Cartoon Network and others and we'll see if something comes of it.

Tonight I'm going to the premiere of "Iron Man." So if you see some guy who looks like me walking in the background past Robert Downey Jr. on E! or something, there's a possibility that it is, in fact, me. Or it could be Dick Cheney...

If the person in question is not being booed, we can safely assume it's not Dick Cheney.

Or if they accidentally shoot somebody in the face; not Peter.

Please please please let it be Jem and the Holograms. PLEASE. :-)

All the luck, good sir!

My money's on Cheney. After all, Stark IS a weapons manufacturer...

I was gonna say that talking with Seth Green recently would be a useful "in" for Adult Swim. However, looking at PAD's list of networks, his project probably isn't aiming at Adult Swim's audience.

Hmmm. My vote is for SPACE CASES; THE ANIMATED SERIES.

I caught a preview of Iron man lastnight -
Loved it!

Good Luck. I just wrapped up six months of pitching to Disney (They passed.) What they lack in speed, they make up for in free bottles of water and validated parking.

You don't perpetually scowl like Cheney (Nor do you radiate evil, for that matter).

Posted by: Paul1963 at April 30, 2008 03:19 PM

If those are the networks you're pitching, I hope your protagonist is under the age of sixteen. I've noticed that kid-targeted shows with adult lead characters, even when they make it to air, tend to be fairly short-lived. Exceptions are shows with pre-sold characters (like Batman, for example). Currently, every Cartoon Network original (not counting Adult Swim) features school-age kids in the leading roles.

Paul1963, you are very right. In fact, even Batman isn't completely an exception. Batman Beyond was created specifically because the Warner Brothers executives wanted a teenage Batman.

PAD,

Good luck and all the best... but if Nick is a possibility... I hope and pray that they treat you better this time than the stunt they pulled with Space Cases.

I just don't see Fallen Angel working on Saturday morning.

Perhaps as an online 'toon.

Posted by: Jason M. Bryant at April 30, 2008 10:57 PM

Saturday morning, definitely not. However, if Spawn could get an animated show on HBO, then Fallen Angel could find a home somewhere. I'd say Adult Swim, but they seem to have two modes: Comedy and Anime.

Hey, if you're still in the area on Saturday, we'd love for you to stop by the store (see my URL) on Free Comic Book Day! We'll have Drew and Karen Johnson there (he's the current artist on Supergirl, and she works for the Simpsons show), as well as Superman, Indiana Jones, Batgirl, and possibly a couple of Stormtroopers from the 501st.

Oh, and of course, free comics...

And best of luck with the animated work.

If you get involved with Nick, I just hope they treat you better than they did Jhonen Vasquez! Apparently, he still can't get the rights to Invader ZIm back, because they sometimes air it on Nicktoons - late, late at night...

(Still wondering what the suits at Nickelodeon were smoking the day they had an empty slot between Rocket Power and The Wild Thornberrys, and decided to fill it with an animated series from the man who created Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and I Feel Sick.)

I'm not sure how well an Anime version of Dark Tower will go over for non-hardcore fans.

Sad to say that the Zim problem is pretty much SOP for hanging onto things like grim death even though they no longer support them.

I will say that it is NOT Fallen Angel or Dark Tower just to get those off the table and out of the rumor mill. Believe me, you have never heard of this series unless you were in a certain office quite a few years ago.

Iron Man is pure dead brilliant... Literally just got back from seeing it.

State the obvious time, but you DO want to stick around until after the end credits!

Cheers.

Saturday mornings are all but dead anyway. They're certainly nothing like they once were. These days, you've got to hope for a weekend night on a kids' cable station. I'm pretty sure that's where the money is.

Anyway, as someone who's always loved cartoons, I wish you the best on this project and have my fingers crossed for you.
