which is what made it worse it wasn't even that they lost. Glavine just collapsed. I think he comes back somewhere so that doesn't become his last game.

It’s just so damn frustrating to see a season flushed down the toilet like that but, you’ve got to give the Phillies credit for getting as hot as they did down the stretch.
When you look back on ’07 it will just be a season full of games that the Mets squandered more than anything else - it’s not that they lost as much as the feeling that they didn’t try hard enough to win.
It will be a long winter listening to the crowing of the fans of that other team though and that is about the only thing I dread but, thankfully the award for baseball’s all time greatest choke still goes to the team that lost the ’04 League Championship Series after being up 3 games to none.

2004 Yankees: make it to the second round of the playoffs and then lose four in a row to a very good team.
2007 Mets: don't even make it to the playoffs by virtue of ending their season by losing six out of seven games to three of the worst teams in the National League, including two teams that lost 89 and 91 games.
Sorry, but it's not even close.

The notion that no one has failed to make the playoffs with seventeen games to go and being up seven is just numbers. The Yankees blowing it to the Sox is grand opera. And every Yankee fan who wrote it off as being a fluke and nothing worth making a big deal about because, they, the Yankees had won a bunch of championships so big deal...those fans have given away the right to snark at the Mets.

I agree with KRAD, it isn’t close at all.
The 2004 team in question has the unique distinction of being THE ONLY team in baseball to lose a best of seven series after being up 3 to 0.

As a Yankee fan, I have nothing bad to say towards the Mets. I do feel horribly for Willie Randolph tho...as I think alot of crap is being thrown his way, and alot of people will continue to blame him for this...And IMO it just doesnt seem justified.
I think in the end it just came down to inconsistent pitching (and a crappy bullpen) and shoddy fielding blowing too many games. I hate to see Willie take the blame, because I doubt there is anything he could have done, and no change of managerial style could have saved them...
As a Yankee fan, I feel bad for the Mets fans. Except my cousin. A couple of months ago I was having dinner at my cousin's house on L.I.
I was saying how I didn't know if the Yankees had a shot at the playoffs. He told me they had no chance at the division and would be third in the wildcard and Clemmons was an old fart and blah, blah, blah...
Of course he also predicted a World Series for the Mets.

I always find it interesting that fans from New York or Boston (and I lived in New England for five years so I have first hand experience) usually have the attitude that no team outside of New York or Boston are

Speaking as a Phillies fan...I have absolutely no earthly idea how this happened.

Considering that when the Mets played there there was a vast sea of empty seats visible in the respective home stadiums of those teams...and considering that many of the occupied seats were filled with Mets fans...I'm not sure there's a whole lot of people in those respective places especially care.

'Choke' is taken. I should know... I'm currently reading it. Great book by Chuck Palahniuk. And yes, I know that has nothing to do with baseball, but I don't pass up opportunities to sing its praise.
I've been a Phillies fan since 1965. I've listened to the chant of '1964' from the obnoxious Mets fans for the last 40+ years. This is sooo sweet. A general manager who was tauted a genius and mastermind. A manager who was considered as possibly the best in the NL. Blah, blah, blah! The collapse or CHOKE can be pinned on those two and the players. Most of them are old, tired and broken down. I was at the Marlins game in Florida last Saturday, Sept. 22. I wore my Phillies shirt and rooted for the Marlins. I'm a quiet guy who doesn't say much other than clapping and maybe some standing on a home run. I appreciate a game with good pitching, hitting and defense. Having said that, half the attendence (almost always disgracefully low at Marlins games) at the stadium were Mets fans. As I walked to my seat in row three behind the Mets bullpen, 40-50 Mets fans started to boo me because of the Phillies shirt. That's fine. I expected it, obviously. During the 3+ hour game, I was subjected to cracks and comments, yelling in my ear, etc. and as I left the park (Mets won 7-2) some continued to tell me the Phillies suck. I quietly walked out. Since high school in Jersey, the obnoxious Mets fans were consistently in my face when they were winning. Of course, when losing, they couldn't be found. Now it's MY TURN. This is wonderful!! Couldn't be happier! The crying. The whining. Finger pointing, bitching & moaning. Oh, happy day!! I couldn't have written a better ending! Did you see that knucklehead at Shea Stadium in the bottom 9th inning Sunday holding up the 'Ya Gotta Believe' sign? Pitiful...what a total loser. The quick camera shots on the home team crowd were priceless. Tug McGraw (and Lenny Dykstra for that matter) bleed Phillies red. They wouldn't be caught DEAD anywhere near this crop of CHOKERS. 1964 is now replaced by 2007. I'll be drawing up a nice, BIG 2007 Mets sign for their fans next season to show them when the 'Let's Go Mets' chant begins at Dolphins Stadium. Maybe I'll make a Spring Training appearance and get in a 'sign warm-up' before the regular season begins. I hope all you formerly talking Mets fans have a nice winter thinking about the 2007 New York Chokers. I'll be down here in 80 degree weather relaxing and playing golf...because i can. Not because I have to. BWAH-HA-HA-HA-HA

I live in Columbus, OH, Home of the Columbus Clippers, the AAA team to the Nats, formerly the AAA affiliate of the Yankees. I don't know that I could name one player on the National's team, but I care about what my former Clipper players do in the Bigs, now that they don't play for the Yankees (i.e. Robinson Cano.)

As far as the Nationals ... I am only slightly following them so far. We are far stronger Orioles fans. We went to one Nationals game this year and about 8 Orioles games. Everyone knew that this year was going to poor year for the Nationals since they went low budget. Next season they will be in the new ballpark and people are expecting the owners to build a good club this off season.

The Phillies are a lot of fun. These guys can score lots of runs. Utley, Rollins, Rowand, Howard- just a bunch of really fun guys to watch.

The Ottawa Senators' fans could sympathize. The team won easily 4 games to 1 in the elimination round of the playoffs, then again 4 games to 1 in the next round, and in the semi finals.
The home fans had the Stanley Cup victory parade route all picked out and ...
The Senasnores wound up against a team called the Annaheim DUCKS of all names, and folded like a cheap deck chair. Their overpaid top talent failing to score a single goal (Captain excepted) ... oh, wait, their star defenceman did score the winning goal in the last game ... pity it was for the other team as he put the puck in his own net, and the team finished off the season with a less-than-sterling 1 game to 4 performance, losing that last one by a dismal 6-2. There are other examples of teams choking, but I'm betting not too many were quite that bad when it counted the most.

Well... I guess the baseball gods must have a delicious sense of irony - how else can you explain the Mets abysmal collapse at the end of the season and then the Phillies going down 0 and 2 as a result of a Grand Slam hit by Kaz Matsui!
The Mets collapse provided some great listening on WFAN and some great work by the tabloid headline writers.
