Peter's Grand Adventure

I am informed by fan supreme Corey Tacker that this month's issue of FNSM marks the publication of my one thousandth comic book.

That's a considerable number of trees that have died to bring you the ravings of my fevered imagination. Apologies to all the environmentalists out there.

I wonder if they'll try to pin global warming on me...

Trees can always be planted, and paper is bio-degradable.

Posted by: Speaker at June 14, 2007 08:45 AM

I agree with Lea. There are animals that live in old growth forests, but also tons of species that prefer new growth.

Also, CONGRATULATIONS!

1000 comics. That's a lot of crappy stories with feeble attempts at humor. I know because I probably read at least 75% of them.
Joking!
That's great, thanks for all the enjoyment, hope there's at least another 1000 PAD books in the future.

One Thousand Comics? C'mon, Peter, don't you know that the trend is to get to around 600 and start over with a new #1 so you don't get such amazingly disturbingly high figures? :)

Congrats on a major milestone! Is there going to be cake?

Posted by: Pat Nolan at June 14, 2007 09:25 AM

CONGRATULATIONS!

and here's to one thousand more.

Posted by: Rex Hondo at June 14, 2007 09:48 AM

So, when is the omnibus edition coming out?

Congrats!

As a fan of yours who's an obsessive completist, I just have to say:

CURSE YOU, MR. DAVID!!!

Congrats on the milestone.

1000 comics! Plus all your books, But I Digreeses(?), and speeches and talks at conventions. Plus your posts on this Blog. Now we know who really is more important, how many artists have drawn 1,000 comics, (Other than Jack Kirby, Will Eisner, and other much missed old guard artists.) Once again Peter David proves substance will always win over Image!

Wonder if Lloyd's insures fingers in case you get cramps?

Ya know, it's stuff like this that makes MY fevered imagination even harder to keep quiet.

Nice job.

Congrats, and thank you for all the enjoyable stories.

Not unless you buy 1000 carbon credits to off set the damage. ;)

Posted by: Jerry Chandler at June 14, 2007 11:46 AM

Wow.

Just out of curiosity, is that count total comics or just the complete ones? I'm only asking because I know you've contributed the odd short here and there or done formats like the Marvel VS DC thing and was wondering if that ups the count or not. Then we can blame the death of even more rain forest on you.

Posted by: Ken from Chicago at June 14, 2007 11:54 AM

Peter, don't sweat it. Trees are a renewable resource. Trees ... grow on trees.

-- Ken from Chicago

P.S. Congrats on the big 1,000.

Posted by: Patrick at June 14, 2007 12:07 PM

Peter,

Was your first published comic, a 'Peter Paker, Spectacular Spider-Man'?

Posted by: Bill Mulligan at June 14, 2007 12:09 PM

I wonder if they'll try to pin global warming on me...

On the contrary---by cutting down trees (which would have just rotted away back into carbon gasses) and turning them into comic books (which are horded and locked away, keeping those deadly carbon compounds from returning to the atmosphere) you have in fact helped save the planet! Indeed, our inevitable doom may have been put off by a few precious years by your efforts alone.

Clearly we need to be cutting down and storing as much wood as possible while continuing to plant more trees. Making comic book buying mandatory may seem like a harsh step but dammit, this is the Earth we are talking about!

Anyway, thank you for all you've done. It was nice of you to actually make the stories entertaining as well as carbon absorbing.

Only a thousand comics. I am ashamed of you Peter, if you really applied yourself, you should have written a million. Next time, try harder. I am sure that you can do it. :-)

Posted by: Levi C at June 14, 2007 01:28 PM

Congrats PAD.

Actually the last study I read they are trying to pin global warming on Byrne from the greenhouse emissions from his numerous openings.

J. Alexander: Only a thousand comics. I am ashamed of you Peter, if you really applied yourself, you should have written a million.

IIRC, he did write a millionth comic. A Young Justice, wasn't it?

Heartfelt congratulations, Peter, from someone who knew you when you sold comics written by OTHER PEOPLE for a living!

Here's hoping that your body of work exceeds, in volume, that of The Late Dr. Asimov! I have every confidence that you'll achieve it!

Posted by: Adam Sorkin at June 14, 2007 03:26 PM

Many congratulations!

Posted by: Corey Tacker at June 14, 2007 03:50 PM

"Just out of curiosity, is that count total comics or just the complete ones?"

Total individual comic issues (excluding variant covers and TPB reprints), whether it was a one-page contribution (Marvel Fumetti Book) or 64 pages (Rahne of Terra). I included the 4 "Negima" manga books. I'm not counting nonfiction pieces such as when PAD only contributed character profiles or essays in a comic.

"Was your first published comic, a 'Peter Paker, Spectacular Spider-Man'?"

Spec Spidey #103 was his first full comic script, but a year or two before that he had an uncredited one-page piece in the Marvel Fumetti Book.

I have to wonder what title Peter has written the most besides the Hulk. Is it SOULSEARCHERS & COMPANY?

Posted by: R.J. Carter at June 14, 2007 04:53 PM

I can't recall a Young Justice #1,000,000 -- but I do recall the Ariel tribute in Supergirl #1,000,000.

As for global warming, I've been sitting on a solution (no, that's another problem, actually, but I've got an idea -- and I keep that there, too.)

We can't cut down the rain forests because those trees provide oxygen, and we may run out.

We can't kill the whales, because they eat plankton which, left to run amok, would overoxygenate the planet.

My idea: For every hundred acres of rain forest we cut down, we get to kill a whale, just to keep the scales even.

Thanks Corey.

I don't suppose anyone is keeping track of how many of PAD's comics have been sold? Has he reached 1 million yet???

Posted by: Corey Tacker at June 14, 2007 06:44 PM

"I have to wonder what title Peter has written the most besides the Hulk. Is it SOULSEARCHERS & COMPANY?"

Yes, but it's really close between Soulsearchers & Supergirl.

He co-wrote 86 total Soulsearchers stories (82 bimonthly issues, 3 short preview comics, 1 half-length FCBD comic) and 82 Supergirl issues (#1-12, 14-80, #1,000,000, Plus #1, Showcase 96 #8).

Hmmm... seems like I'm missing about 45 of the comics (assuming reprints count - add 35 if they don't). And I thought I was a fan... :-(

Global warming? nah.

Heart-warming - for sure!

Thanks for all the wonderful stuff! :)

Congrats Peter!

I wonder with Stan Lee's deal at Disney if they will be making a new version of the Hulk inspired by the Beauty and the Beast. It might be called "Beauty and the Hulk".... just think we may hear Bruce Banner singing to Betty in a musical version of the comic.

Posted by: Hulkin' Vulcan at June 14, 2007 10:42 PM

Congrats on your #1000 comic.

Was the first one the "Sin Eater" saga with Spectacular Spider-Man. I remember soon after that the "Death of Jean DeWofe" followed.

"I don't suppose anyone is keeping track of how many of PAD's comics have been sold? Has he reached 1 million yet???"

From what I remember Peter telling me years ago, the first issue of his run on the original X-Factor series (#70?) sold about a million copies just by itself.

Indeed, Peter, you have doomed us all!

But at least we'll die entertained. ^_^

Posted by: The StarWolf at June 15, 2007 07:37 AM

I suspect Congress alone probably uses up more paper in a month, and I know which of the two [Congress/PAD] has the greater social redeeming value. ;-)

So is this the FSNM #21 thread?
Short review; it was real good.

Posted by: Kevin T. Brown at June 15, 2007 08:36 AM

Congratulations, PAD! You don't look an issue over 800....

Posted by: pastorgavin at June 15, 2007 10:44 AM

Congratulations!

I remember that when I was in college I began reading your Supergirl series when it first came out and gave up on it around issue 32. I was hoping for Superman themes and not religious ones... surprising as I was training to be a pastor. Anyway, I've just pulled out those 32 issues and fallen in love with the story. It's leaps and bounds above the current Supergirl and it tackled a number of difficult themes in thought-provoking ways (not all that I agree with, but well thought out nonetheless). Now I'm going to waste way too much money trying to find the rest of the series. At least I can get the last 5 issues as a TPB.

Anyway, thanks for all of your wonderful writing. And again, congratulations on 1000.

Posted by: ArcLight at June 15, 2007 02:26 PM

Awesome. Here's to many thousands more....

Just wanted to say thanks PAD. Your Hulk stuff redefined comics for me as a kid and your X-Factor and book on writing comics reignited the "comic geek" flame as an adult.

Thanks again!
