Stuff I'm doing at the moment

At the moment, I've got "The Fugitive" on so I can watch Andreas Katsulas in one of his more memorable non-G'Kar roles as the One-Armed Man. Meantime I'm rereading old issues of "The Champions" to refamiliarize myself with that team in order to write a one-shot Hulk vs. the Champions story for an upcoming Hulk annual. Meanwhile I'm working out by hand (because that's how I always work on novel plots) a revised ending for my "Battlestar Galactica" novel since what I had was too similar to some recent episodes (the episode short descriptions I had for the rest of the season didn't include several key plot points that overlapped). Furthermore I'm doing knee-flex exercises to help heal my blown-out right knee that I did some damned thing to while I was bowling a few weeks back.

Coming out soon on DVD, speaking of bowling: "The League of Ordinary Gentlemen," a marvelous documentary about several key members of the Pro Bowling Association. Distributed by Magnolia Pictures and definitely worth watching.

And now I am finally convinced that bringing back the annuals was a good idea. A chance to get another Hulk story out of PAD? I'm there.

I know the specific "The Champions" of which you speak, of course. But I flashed to another team with that name - the British adventure show that ran as a summer replacement on NBC back in the 60's. The one with the three agents for one of those anonymous spy agencies named "Nemesis," whose plane crashed in the Himalayas. They were fixed up and given superpowers by a hidden race of monks, who somehow hid from the Chinese who then had posession of those mountains.

After the pilot episode, they bounced around various international locations - namely anything they could simulate on a soundstage or on Britain's backroads - defeating villains with some limited super-strength, healing power, telepathy/empathy and enhanced senses.

The odd part about the show was that the attractive female on the team had almost nothing to do, even though she had the same powers. It was the two guys who ran off on missions together, leaving her behind, and giving the show something of a gay atmosphere. (The guys were a supposed American - actually an actor with a mid-Atlantic accent - and a more middle-class Brit. The blonde had an upper-class British accent.)

Pad just out of curiosity do you write books that arent part of a franchise? I love walking into a store and seeing the latest book from a paticular author I enjoy reading. The few psionic books of yours I read I enjoyed immensely. Reminded me of my favorite books as a kid Louis Lamour and the Remo Williams stuff.

Actually, it's always amused me the number of Marvel team books that shared titles, but nothing else, with TV series.

As said, there was CHAMPIONS, and then, of course, THE AVENGERS. Also THE INVADERS and THE DEFENDERS. And, though it isn't a team book, there's also NOVA.

Any others?

John Z.-
There are the King Arthur books which the third will be coming out shortly. Sir Apropos of Nothing and the two sequels are still in print and coming this fall The Hidden Earth. And there is always Howling Mad.

Wow, Peter, you really get into researching your characters, don't you? I mean, blowing out your right knee while you're writing a BSG novel, just so you can know how it feels for Starbuck to walk on it since the events in "You Can't Go Home Again"?

Just tell me you're not going to put that level of research into the physical lives of the Adamas...

Posted by: Jay at February 25, 2006 10:44 AM

PAD, I recall when the first new Galactica miniseries came out. IIRC, you gave a review that basically said, "Eh......" I'm glad to see you're enjoying it more. Now if you write a few eps for them too, maybe they won't be too similar to what they're already doing. One thing I've always enjoyed about your writing is you have a way of throwing a curveball at the reader that's often unexpected. Say, having Starbuck hook up with an insane guy from Baltimore....wait, that's more of a pipe dream.

PAD:

re:The Champions vs. Hulk mini:

is this going to take place in the past? Because the surviving Champions can't really reunite very easily.

Also, Champions member Ghost Rider fought the Hulk in Ghost Rider (Johnny Blaze series) #11. This tale takes place before GR joined the champions.

The issue can easily be found in Essential GR Vol. 1.

The Hulk vs the Champions, sweet!

Posted by: Mick Martin at February 25, 2006 11:42 AM

The Hulk also fought the Champions in the teams' second-to-last issue. It was reprinted in Essential Super-Villain Team-Up. It was a big battle royale with Magneto, Dr. Doom, Beast, The Champions, and Hulk.

What's funny about the first time I saw The Fugitive (guy accused of murdering his wife, claims someone else did it, and flees) was that I saw it on Pay-Per View, and as soon as it was over, and I clicked onto a different channel, where it looked like a parade of police cars behind a white truck was taking place, even though the narrators kept referring to it as a "chase." It was the O.J. Simpson slow-speed chase. Weird.

Btw, what does everyone think of the newly-released image of Spidey's black & white costume for Spider-Man 3? I think it's awful. It's just a darker-colored version of his regular costume, instead of the really cool black number with the big white spider on it that we've come to know and love. What were they thinking?

No, it's the real deal.

Unless Sony is lying to us. Try checking out the official Spider-Man website from Sony. :)

ALIAS immediately springs to mind, although it wasn't a team book.

I'm always amused by the movies which share titles with Marvel characters (and nothing else), especially if said movies came out after the character was created. QUICKSILVER (bicyclist) and ICEMAN (unfrozen caveman) are examples, the rest of which I've already forgotten while typing those last two. Blast!

Craig: No, it's the real deal. Unless Sony is lying to us. Try checking out the official Spider-Man website from Sony.
Luigi Novi: I wasn't questioning the authenticity of the pic. I was questioning the artistic decision on the part of the person(s) who decided to simply go with a different-colored version of Spide's regular "web" costume, as opposed to the actualy opaque, black-and-white version that was used in the comis, which (to me) looks way cooler, and is a far bolder design statement in terms of it apart from the original costume.

Posted by: Tom Galloway at February 25, 2006 11:40 PM

While shortly after The Champions series ended, you might also want to check out Hulk Annual #7, which guest starred Angel and Iceman.

Luigi Novi: I wasn't questioning the authenticity of the pic.

You know, I could've SWORE I made a second post about the fact that I made my first post too quickly, and that I knew I was interpreting incorrectly what you were saying, Luigi, but my fingers were faster than my brain.

*sigh*

I'm iffy on whether I like this costume or not. On one hand, it seems like they didn't make any effort: take the red/blue costume, and paint it black, it's done.

But on the other hand, the movie costume has that ribbing/web-looking stuff on it that isn't in the comics - the comics have the black lines and all, but it doesn't appear to stand out, like the movie-version costume does.

So, having that stuff remain on the outside of the costume, and the symbiont not cover it, still makes sense.

Luigi Novi: Must make riding elevators a bitch.

:-)

As for the costume, to each their own.

Well, if we're looking out for Champions appearances, there's also Godzilla #3 - the Champions (well, Black Widow, Iceman, Angel, Hercules - Darkstar and Ghost Rider were supposed to be off somewhere) squabble with Dum Dum Dugan's Godzilla-hunting branch of SHIELD while trying to stop the big G from destroying too much of San Francisco ...

Posted by: wolfe at February 26, 2006 07:39 PM

Peter,
If you know: is this Hulk/Champions book just to hold the copyright (like those Capt Marvel one-shots in the early 90s) or a precursor to some solid plans for the Champions?

Posted by: RabidWolfe at February 26, 2006 07:52 PM

Intersting - when the Champions fought the Hulk during that crossover with Super-villain team-up: well, no one actually recalls that fight, because of Doom's mind control gas, IIRC.

I sbould have known someone like Tom Galloway would beat me to a comics reference posting... but Hulk Annual #7, with Hulk, Iceman and Angel vs the Master Mold is a great read, from back when John Byrne drew comics (it was written by Roger Stern).

It's got one of my all-time favorite bits of comic dialog. Upon expressing his desire to escape the Master Mold's satellite, A&I direct ol' greenskin to look out the port hole.

His response?
"Bah! Hulk has fallen farther."

Posted by: Dinoboy at February 27, 2006 11:57 AM

Dear Mr David,

So glad to read we have more Hulk to look forward to from you. Much, much sorrier to read about your knee. In the meantime looking forward to your next issue of Friendly Neighborhood Spidey-Man.

May I also suggest another good non-G'Kar role of Andreas Katsulas: ST:TNG's Admiral Tomalok

His best scenes/episodes were throughout the the 3rd season but I think "All Good Things.." should be showing up on SpikeTV soon.

Posted by: Luke K. Walsh at February 27, 2006 04:01 PM

Heh! That IS pretty good, joelfinkle.

Posted by: Todd P. Emerson at February 27, 2006 07:41 PM

joelfinkle quoted:
"Bah! Hulk has fallen farther."

MY favorite Hulk line came from the BATMAN/HULK crossover, where he declares that "little men are like ANTS! Make Hulk ITCH!"

Or something like that. I'm quoting from memory, and it ain't what it used to be.

Wow, does this mean The Champions are coming back? If so, I hope you find a way to bring back Darkstar(ie. she's not dead but trapped in the Darkforce Dimension?) The way she was just killed off in X-Men pissed of a lot of people. It would be interesting for her to come back in X-Factor since her teammates when she got killed were Jaime and Siryn.

Stuff I'll be doing this weekend:

reading the latest issues of:
Fallen Angel
X-Factor
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
Soulsearchers

However did you get them to all come out in the same week?

However did you get them to all come out in the same week?

I'd love to know too.

I just got my first monthly shipment again, and of the six books I went for, only two showed up - the other four come out tomorrow, three of those being PAD titles.

Damn February for being a short month and screwing everything up. :P

At the moment, I've got "The Fugitive" on so I can watch Andreas Katsulas in one of his more memorable non-G'Kar roles as the One-Armed Man.

Y'know, ever since what happened to G'Kar at Emperor Cartagia's hands, I always liked to refer to G'Kar as the One-Eyed Narn.

"I didn't do it! It was the One-Eyed Narn! He broke into my house -- he killed my wife!"
