Who says size doesn't matter

I thought you guys might be interested in checking out the cover art for my book on writing comics at Amazon.

Whattaya think? Think my name's big enough?

My...what a big....name you have.

Posted by: Patrick Bunch at January 16, 2006 06:48 PM

Geez, this probably means you can start wearing a cape.

Posted by: Rinda Zing at January 16, 2006 06:53 PM

I think that's terrible. That guy Stan Lee writes a lovely comment on your front cover and he has buy his copy! You don't even give him a free one.
You bastard!

Lol! Good luck with it.

Posted by: James Meeley at January 16, 2006 07:11 PM

You know, some might say you are compensating for "lacking" elsewhere.

But then, I'd have to ask them just how they knew that. They usually get pretty quiet after i do that.

Still, catchy looking cover.

Posted by: Jason M. Bryant at January 16, 2006 07:22 PM

Yep, that's a pretty big name. It get's the point across, though.

The only thing that I don't like is the little orange text under the name. It's so close to the background color that it's hard to read. I'm sure it'll be easier in real life when it's full size. I'm just straining my eyes a bit trying to read the amazon pic.

Posted by: Nat Gertler at January 16, 2006 07:35 PM

Yes, but it's not clear from the cover who the author is.

I mean, TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE isn't -by- Morrie, so there's no reason to assume that WRITING FOR COMICS WITH PETER DAVID is -by- Peter David. It may just be a book on how to collaborate with you!

I'll be second in line to buy a copy, but that's partly because I'll get to stand behind Stan and ask him questions while we're waiting.

Posted by: John Zacharias at January 16, 2006 07:53 PM

Nifty looking book.

I remember as a kid buying the "How to draw like a comic book artist."

I tried super hard to draw anything that resembled the pictures.
Turns out much like singing I should leave it to the people getting paid to do it. =)

One of these days I will try and collect all the books you wrote. I just need to remember to ask wife for one each time my birthday comes up.

Posted by: Joe Nazzaro at January 16, 2006 08:04 PM

You know, if they made Stan Lee's name just a tiny bit smaller, maybe your name could be a little bigger. Just a thought.

Posted by: Bob Jones at January 16, 2006 08:22 PM

You write comics?!?

Posted by: Queen Anthai at January 16, 2006 09:01 PM

I can see it now:

"Kath? Does this font make my ego look too big?"

*watching TV* "No, dear." :)

Posted by: Bill Mulligan at January 16, 2006 09:10 PM

Damn. How big are your feet?

Posted by: Scott Iskow at January 16, 2006 10:10 PM

You know what sucks about this book? That I have to wait until June. Looking forward to it, PAD!

Posted by: Hysteria at January 16, 2006 10:24 PM

No, no it certainly is not big enough.

You need to go up a few more points in font size.

And the color needs to be hot, florescent pink.

Seriously though, this is pretty cool. I'm looking forward to reading it.

(And now I'll give you a chance to plug it to us masses) I am curious, though--what kind of information on writing for comics does it contain?

Posted by: Patrick Calloway at January 16, 2006 10:24 PM

Okay, the moment I saw this I flashed on an exchange from BTVS:

"Kath? Does this font make my ego look too big?"

"No dear, the fact that your ego is big makes your ego look big. The font just makes it look blue..."

Bonus points for anyone who recognizes the ep where the paraphrase came from. (Yeah, so I'm a big geek. Not excatly like I'm in bad company for it... ;)

If you're not a big name writer now you're certainly going to be soon :)

Hopefully Amazon will have a description to go along with the book.

Posted by: Matt Adler at January 16, 2006 11:07 PM

I read that guy's Gulf War book, didn't much care for it.

Posted by: joeyfixit at January 16, 2006 11:09 PM

Neat. Congrats. I'll probably buy one.

Saw some stuff about a big marvel retreat in which JMS, Bendis, Loeb, and a bunch of others including Joss Whedon, attended and storylines were hashed out through 2007.

Were you there? If not, why not? You've been grousing about getting short shrift from DC, but I thought your relations at Marvel were okay. As evidenced by you coming back to the Hulk. My understanding was that your leaving the book (this time) was your own choice.

Am I wrong? Are PAD/Marvel relations rocky? Is the future uncertain? The end always near?

I notice that the title is "Writing Comics WITH Peter David." Normally, this nomenclature is used when the book is written by someone else. Otherwise, it would have been "Writing Comics BY Peter David." So, fess up. Who ghosted the book? Or is there a statement in very small type saying, "As told to Brian Michael Bendis" or something, just underneath those enormous letters?

Posted by: Stacy Dooks at January 17, 2006 12:17 AM

Nice. It will surely dominate the shelves come June. Consider my copy already preordered.

So who's writing this book?

Does your middle name stand for An Original Signer of the Declaration of Independence?

Look forward to reading it.

Until later

Challenged by Patrick Calloway:

"Bonus points for anyone who recognizes the ep where the paraphrase came from. (Yeah, so I'm a big geek. Not excatly like I'm in bad company for it... ;)"

ahem...

FAT VAMP: Does this sweater make me look fat?
SUNDAY: No, the fact that you're fat makes you look fat. That sweater just makes you look purple.

Season Four, Episode One, "The Freshman." Written & directed by Joss Whedon. Now available to own on DVD!

(Put out a challenge like that while I'M in the crowd, will you?)

If I'm "writing comics with (bum-bum-BUM!) PETER DAVID", does that mean I have to split the paycheck with him too?

Nice. Got any real release date, or estimate?

Posted by: Kelly R. Hoose at January 17, 2006 09:24 AM

Can't wait to get my hands on it.

Posted by: Mitchel at January 17, 2006 10:13 AM

This book sounds like something I'd want to get. Now, when can we get some news about the upcoming Wonder Man limited? Any artists lined up?

Posted by: R. Maheras at January 17, 2006 10:39 AM

I love the 3-D, comic book logo-style lettering!

It’s a bird… It’s a plane… It’s PETER DAVID!!!

Posted by: The StarWolf at January 17, 2006 10:49 AM

Peter who?

Posted by: James M. Gill at January 17, 2006 11:09 AM

Pre-ordered my copy! :)

Posted by: Luigi Novi at January 17, 2006 04:11 PM

I just pre-ordered right now too. I can't wait. :-)

Posted by: BrakYeller at January 17, 2006 05:35 PM

Niiiiice. Now all I need is some income...

Posted by: Luke K. Walsh at January 17, 2006 07:01 PM

This choice of cover says makes that this book about writing comics, but the most important thing is - it's PETER DAVID!!! Yah, that's large; and cool.

Posted by: Bob Jones at January 18, 2006 10:17 PM

FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #4: Yeah, This is why I buy comics.

Posted by: TallestFanEver at January 20, 2006 12:31 AM

Watch that font, you'll poke your eye out with it.

Posted by: TallestFanEver at January 21, 2006 02:40 AM

Is this book going to cover the submission process (cover letters, plot summaries, who to submit it too, all that jazz) / how to deal with the inevitable & heartbreakingly crushing stony silence that one receives when dealing with the submission process (aside from, y’know, “toughen up or find a new profession”)? That's a huge selling point, personally.

Posted by: Kathleen David at January 21, 2006 11:50 AM

TFE-
There is some material on the submission process. The "how to deal with not hearing from anyone" or "being told that your work is 'not what they are currently looking for'" book is the one I am working on since I know both sides of the typewriter on that one. Acctually I could write a book on rejection.

Posted by: Peter David at January 21, 2006 12:13 PM

Actually, yes, the book will cover the submission process, but I didn't write that section. Instead I asked Marvel editor Andy Schmidt to step in and produce an essay as to how to submit comics and what to expect, and he did a gangbusters job doing so. I also have the Dark Horse submissions guide in the book as well.

I only noticed four words that would prompt me to buy this book:

1. Stan Lee

2. Peter David

While I have no doubt that you'd give The Man a free autographed copy as a courtesy, the fact that he'd PAY for the book automatically guarantees One Million Copies Sold Status IMHO!

Look forward to reading it!

My only complaint is that we have to wait so long before it's released.
