Geez, is it ghastly out today

Yesterday it was in the low 60s and one could actually walk around outside in shirt sleeves.

Today the temperature has dropped to below freezing, the wind is blasting at something around thirty miles and hour, snow is blowing around, and the streets and sidewalks are sheets of ice.

It's a good day for staying in, working, watching PBA bowling at 1 PM, and being grateful that we're living in something other than a refrigerator box.

Also, we're deep in the midst of potty training Caroline, so this is a good day to focus on that.

Just finished reading PAD's short story in the Meeting ACross the River anthology. Very sweet, cute and funny. Typical PAD. Don't know if the other stories will measure up, but at least one is first class.

Potty training, oy. Better you than me, friend.

As for the cold weather--Global Warming! Caused by trees! Reagan was right!

How the hell we could have missed this...I'm dubious. But if true it really complicates things.

Any day that ends with two new hours of 24 is not "ghastly". Break out the microwave popcorn, it is time for Jack.

Wanna trade weather? We're building an ark here in Seattle,...

Friday, it was in the 60's here too. A student in one of my classes said, "Hey, it's springtime!" I said, "No, it's not. It's January."

Posted by: KIP LEWIS at January 15, 2006 04:38 PM

60s one day; 30's the next!!! It's the end of the world!!!

OK, maybe not.

I just wish the warm days would happen on the days I get off early and the nasty days happen when I'm at work all day.

I drove home from work last night on the Atlantic City Expressway and couldn't see 10 feet in front of me. Scary.

I'm staying in today.- Watched some of the Steelers upset over Indy and watched Jet Li's
Unleashed on DVD. A very weird movie, but good.
Morgan Freeman makes any movie he appears in that much better.

So does Christopher Walkin.

I can't believe how mild it's been here in Denver this winter.

The mountains have been getting well-above average amounts of snow, and the Front Range has been dry, making it seem like the drought never really ended.

Thankfully, it's supposed to snow overnight tonight.

But it was 55 degrees out again today, hit 60 yesterday, and except for a two-week span in early December when we had some record low temps, this is probably the mildest winter I can remember (living in IL and IA, you don't get reprises from the cold :) ).

Posted by: jkc918 at January 15, 2006 09:32 PM

That's why I left NY for Texas. Tired of the winters. Any ice or snow we get is almost certainly is gone by noon.

Posted by: Luigi Novi at January 15, 2006 09:53 PM

Well, be thankful you didn't have to stand outside today and convince passersby to stop and accept invitations for movie screenings like I did. Granted, I only had 19 passes left today because I (thank God) did 31 yesterday, but it was something I wished I didn't have to do.

"Any day that ends with two new hours of 24 is not "ghastly"."

It is when it preempts Family Guy!

Posted by: James Carter at January 15, 2006 11:00 PM

Thank God I live in Florida! Although we HAVE had some cold nights, there is no snow, no nuthin'.

"It is when it preempts Family Guy!"

and tragedy strikes again on Fox. What DO they have against Family Guy anyway?

Posted by: Marv at January 15, 2006 11:58 PM

I prefer warmer weather but it is a bit disturbing how it can change from winter conditions one day and then the next day it turns to spring in the middle of January.

Posted by: Bill Mulligan at January 16, 2006 12:14 AM

You have to CONVINCE people to go see a movie for free? What the hell movie was it? Bloodrayne?

"and tragedy strikes again on Fox. What DO they have against Family Guy anyway?"

Against Family Guy? You're kidding. Family Guy is treated like manna from heaven compared to the way they treated Futurama. They preempted that one so much that when the DVD set came out, I was convinced that the disk would have nothing but football games on it.

PAD: another reason to be grateful. I flew 1500 miles to visit my son (who lives with his mother in Florida) only to be greeted with temps lower than those in Ohio and winds that blew the sand on the beach with such velocity that I now have perfect skin.

Ahh, another winter storm threat, another laugher from mother nature.

I'd love to be a weatherman - get paid to be wrong ALL THE TIME. Must be nice.

Maybe next time they won't issue a winter storm watch more than 24 hours ahead of time. :P

I'm afraid Sunday morning was not a good one for me for reasons that had nothing to do with weather.

I had to bury my cat of 14 years.

We have two other cats of about the same age, but they're both quite healthy. (Toni, who died Saturday evening, had a congestive heart condition.) They're some comfort.

But Toni was the one who had most bonded with me. I think what hurts the most is coming home and not having her come running up to great me anymore. No, not to be fed -- to be babied. She liked to jump up on the kitchen table by our garage door so I could pet her, massage her, she could rub against me, etc.

Luckily, the end seemed to be peaceful. No cries, no convulsions, just going to sleep for that one last time.

Anyone with a pet that doesn't have to live in water or something like that, please hug them.

God bless you all.

Posted by: Bill Mulligan at January 16, 2006 01:35 PM

Kim, sorry to hear about Toni. I've got 3 cats myself and they bring more enjoyment to life than can possibly be explained to anyone who doesn't have pets. No slam against those of you who totally can't understand how anyone can get emotional over an animal; either you're a pet person or you aren't.

I'm glad her end was a peaceful one. Take care.

Peter,

You should try living up here in Rochester. It was in the mid to upper 50's all last week and then BAM! into the teens on Friday. It was 7 degrees this morning.

Have a look at my new website when you get a chance.

THanks
Wally

Family Guy seems to be treated just fine since its resurection. I agree with PAD Futurama was continually shafted because of the early timeslot and if football went in to overtime Fox just wouldn't air the episode instead of pushing everything back a half hour. Come to think of it I think they still do the same thing with King of the Hill.

James Carter: What DO they have against Family Guy anyway?
Luigi Novi: The fact that most episodes of the new fourth season flat-out SUCK, and aren't nearly as funny as the first three seasons?

Posted by: Rat at January 16, 2006 06:27 PM

Hey, ANY show that I can watch cracking up while Stace looks at me as though I've grown three more heads out of various orifices can't be ALL bad.

And Peter, luck on Potty training. Can't give ya any advice, seeing as how Brian's, y'know, a boy, and he pretty much taught himself. Well, Stace and my sister helped a little, or so they SAY...

'Tis the season, I guess -- my mother-in-law just buried her cat of 18 1/2 years a little over a week back.

Kim, my deepest condolences -- it's a hard, hard, thing. I'm glad it was at least a peaceful end, and that you're in the company of other loving felines.

The fact that most episodes of the new fourth season flat-out SUCK, and aren't nearly as funny as the first three seasons?

I put that down partially to the fact that all the obvious jokes are gone, and I am getting very jaded. What could shock me into laughter the first time is old hat by now.

Family Guy seems to be treated just fine since its resurection.

I think that is BECAUSE of its resurection. Fox is scared to touch it.

As for their treatment of Futurama and King of the Hill, truthfully, I don't care. I mean, Futurama was never, IMHO, anywhere near as good as The Simpsons, and I never really got King Of The Hill. NO insult to anyone who likes them, I just was never a fan.

We had a pretty wild day down here in Maryland as well. I thought my dachshund was gonna do that "Flying Nun" thing with his ears in the wind but he stayed grounded. We all gathered around the TV to watch many episodes of The Flash DVD Set. I was otherwise employed elsewhere on the planet when the series came out in 1990. It's pretty damn good, IMHO.

I mean, Futurama was never, IMHO, anywhere near as good as The Simpsons

And here I think the Simpsons has been on 5 years too long, and Futurama should've never been pulled off the air. :)

Posted by: James Carter at January 16, 2006 10:47 PM

And here I think the Simpsons has been on 5 years too long

Well, this could turn nasty....

Nothing more vicious then a cornered "Simpsons*" fan.

Unless it is a cornered "Simpsons" fan facing off with a "Futurama" fan.
"So the only question is....Do you feel lucky? Well? Do ya, Punk?"

*and no, I don't mean Ashlee and Jessica.

I thought I read Fox was considering new episodes of "Futurama", because of the re-appearance of "Family Guy" they're hoping for lightning to strike twice.

Yeah, I read that too.

And I wouldn't consider it 'lightning striking twice'.

I'd consider it "Fox knows they fubared twice".

My goodness, potty training. Me too, two kids at once. Winter doesn't really seem the smartest time for it, all these clothes to get on and off. If I'd planned better, I'd have managed to potty train in summer . . .
