Project Updates

Here's a rundown of what I've been up to:

ST: The New Frontier--M.I.A.: That's the title, not the status. Manuscript with revision requests from Paramount received last week. Delivered back to Pocket Books with revisions completed last Tuesday. Publication slated for next Spring.

Animated Series Pilot--Final draft delivered to show's creator and producers two days ago. (No, I didn't create the show, but it's flattering that the show's creator wanted me to write the pilot). Now we see if it gets sold.

How To Write Comics--Final draft delivered to Impact Press. Publicaton slated for next Summer.

Fall of Knight--Third book in King Arthur trilogy, delivered to Ace Books. Slated for publication next summer.

Hidden Earth--Tor is circulating bound manuscript to authors for quotes. Anyone know Terry Pratchett? Seriously?

Spike vs. Dracula--Five issue limited series that IDW just got the go-ahead for, charting the history of the Spike/Dracula feud and why specifically Dracula owes Spike money. Slated to feature guest appearances by Drusilla, Darla, Bela Lugosi, Ed Wood, and Adolf Hitler. Slated for early next year.

Fallen Angel--Script for issue #2 turned in. Issue #2 will also feature two covers, one by J.K. Woodward, and one by Dave Lopez. I'll be putting both of them up on the site in the near future.

I'm sorry if I missed this in a previous thread, but can you tell us what the animated series is?

I love Pratchett, read almost everything. Big fan of Commander Vimes, Carrot and Nobby. How can I help you?

Posted by: Neil Robertson at October 6, 2005 02:32 AM

Open (but related) request here: I own a comics shop and I've been trying to get three copies of the Spike one-shot just to fill remaining orders from my customers (Diamond shorted me on the quantity I originally ordered and has been unable to replace the missing copies, and it doesn't look like there will be a second printing). Does anyone know where I can get just three more copies? I'll pay full cover price and eat the profit just to fill my customers requests.

Well, if you love him in the sense that you roll over in bed and there he is, then I'd appreciate you're putting in a good word for me. Otherwise...

Can we expect Spike to drop by Furors and annoy Lee?

Seriously -- as to the Terry Pratchett question -- could you maybe get to him through Neil Gaiman (did i spell that wrong?)?

PAD, thanks so much for not abandoning this character just because DC missed the boat.

That might be a bad idea. I heard stories that Gaiman will call in those favors. You ask him for a small favor one day... and then three or four months later he'll come to town for a book signing or comiccon and not want to use a hotel room cause the food stinks or they don't have a working toilet or something... and then you're stuck with Neil at your house for two days. Then he finishes that New York Times crossword you've been working on for a week (by yourself to prove to you can) and then drinks all the orange juice and eats all the breakfast food and doesn't go down the street to the 7-11 to get more. If it was good breakfast food, you'll get a small 'special thanks' nod in the front of a book or something.

PAD, you team up with Dr. Evil and clone yourself or something? Or are you just really productive on the plane. Yeesh, between all the stuff you've got going, the kids, AND the cons you attend, there must be at least two of you running around.

um, unless you've had your sleep removed? that could get messy

Oh man Peter...this is so cool about more Spike comics....I love the guy, obviously and I want his story to go on forever. Plus I think your last one was great and I loved the artwork.
If Joss will ever let you do a future Spike comic series...I hope you are still up for it. I guess that will have to wait til Joss decides what he wants to do for the movies, if they get done. But anyway, in the meantime, more Spike tales are great, and you so know Spike can kick Drac's ass.

Please keep the Spike stuff coming and I will buy it....oh and yeah...might be a good idea to make more copies this time........

The comics load seemed a little light until I realized Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man wasn't on the list. A temporary lull during the crossover?

Posted by: Thomas E. Reed at October 6, 2005 12:33 PM

Good news, except for the continuing popularity of vampires. (I believe all fans of vampires should be slammed against a brick wall, or even more sadistically, stuck in that Skinner box experiment complex they have on "Lost" for the rest of their lives.)

I can almost certainly (and happily) predict that it won't be an "Angel" animated series, though. Americans still believe that animated shows are only for kids. If you want to watch animated series about people killing each other, you have to go to "Battle Royale" or other Japanese violence porn.

For a look at what such a Buffy series might look at...although set in a different universe...watch "Totally Spies" on Cartoon Network. Old guy advisor, Val-speak teenage slang, more comedy than menace, plenty of toyetic gadgets to sell with the action figures, fashion design and big hair characters to appeal to young girls, and a touch of sexiness to get young males interested. If this troubles you, remember that "Spies" is made in France, and like all French attempts to copy American culture, it's ninety degrees out of phase.

Posted by: Thomas E. Reed at October 6, 2005 12:42 PM

Whoops! I deleted a paragraph from the previous post, which should be the second-to-last paragraph. I was going to say that Mr. D's project could very well be a "Buffy" series. She is considered "kid friendly," despite the company she keeps. She would also be a "toyetic" character, for whom a line of action figures, toys, vehicles, et cetera, would certainly be snapped up by her fan base. And I stick by my estimation that the series would look something like "Totally Spies"...minus the mis-aimed French attitude towards the way "real American teens" act.

I'd only add that, unfortunately, they'll probably add those offsetting elements of anime that you see in "Totally Spies" and "Teen Titans." Super-deformed characters, those transparent teardrops on the backs of people's heads, things like that. Currently, animation companies see this as tapping into the popularity of anime; it doesn't work, and it might alienate the adult Buffy fans, but that's the art style the animation execs are insisting on these days.

Posted by: Bobb at October 6, 2005 12:46 PM

Anime/Manga influenced comics might not "work" in Mr. Reed's opinion, but it sure sells. And whatever is selling at the moment, that's for sure what we're going to see more of.

I hope you're not dismissing it because it's Anime. As a style, there's good and bad, just like with any other style, but the content and quality are not dependant upon the style.

I think I've used up my "Neil favors" scoring Tori Amos tickets for my eldest daughter. Besides, he's on the road for the next two months promoting "Anansi Boys." Everyone wants a piece of him during these tours; I don't want to add to it.

Didn't mention FNSM since I basically did several months worth of Spidey work in one shot, so I've got some time on that.

Well, I figured that you must be busy, PAD, since there've been no threads on current events lately, or review of Serenity (beyond a mention in the "Erik, you ..." thread), etc. Guess "busy" would be an understatement. MAN, man.

The Spike vs. Dracula LS sounds like a GREAT idea! Another great catch of an open gap in BtVS history which you can interestingly fill.

dave w. - as you can probably deduce from the speculation on this thread, PAD has kept the nature of the animated series under wraps, so, no, you didn't miss anything. In fact, we've learned more about it on this thread - that PAD was invited to work on it, not the creator of it - than we had before.

As far as it being Buffy Animated, while that would be cool, I've read in the Buffy magazine - still being published, every other month, now with more Angel features - Angel mag comes out on the alternate month, now with BtVS features - that there are I believe at least eight completed scripts around for that, and that they've put together a presentation piece, complete with voices by several of the original cast members. The last time - a couple of issues ago, I believe - Buffy Animated was mentioned, it did sound like they were actively pursuing getting it made; but, with as much work as they reportedly already have done, unless they decided to throw out old scripts - and regular Buffy writers such s Jane Espenson wrote them - it seems unlikely that this would be PAD's mysterious animated project ....

On your 'How To Write Comics' I've been trying to figure out the best way to plot and plan a comicbook. Don't suppose you'd be able to give me any tips?

Posted by: ktkins at October 6, 2005 05:21 PM

I am thrilled to here you are writing more Spike. A lot of fans are dissapointed about the lack of stories set in Spike's post soul period but I guess the hope for a Spike movie has the PTB keeping a reign on those possibilities. I'm not though, dissapointed about more of Spike's past that is, you did such a fantastic job in Old Times where I know to your mind he was pre-soul that I am chomping at the bit for more.

Just one request though, give Spike a little horizontal action with Darla. It's not like Angel and him shagging each other's women isn't a pattern. (wink)

Oh and for those who didn't get Old Times, IDW are again taking pre-orders for copies and Star Power/Tv Merch are re-stocking this month. Don't miss out again, this comic rocks in both writing and artwork and is vastly superior to The Curse series which whitewashed Angel to the point he didn't resemble the character on the TV.

The Spike mini is great news. Just out of curiosity, was it your idea?

Posted by: Peter David at October 6, 2005 06:24 PM

Depends what you mean by "my idea." It was IDW's idea to say, "We'd love to have you do a Spike limited series." I was the one who wanted it to be Spike vs. Dracula, with each issue set in a different time period. They asked me while I was still working on the one shot, so I laid some groundwork for it with Spike's visit to Lugosi's grave.

*SQUEAL!*

...ahem...

Pratchett is arguably the best living fantasy/fiction writer alive today. And I say this knowing full well that I'm on PAD's site and an unabashed PADophile -- Terry is that good.

He combines wit, wisdom, humor, pathos, tragedy, and three-dimensional characterization with aplomb, and his mile-long length of titles (and worldwide sales) is IMO a testament to his skill.

If you haven't discovered Pratchett yet, you're missing out on a lot.

And now, I'll shamelessly plug my own web site here, which has an extensive collection of quotes from Terry's works: Terry Pratchett Quotes

Is Paramount picky about the revisions that you have to make on the New Frontier novels? Do you have to change the whole premise of your novel after they are finished?

You can do a lot without established characters or ones that didn't get a lot of attention.

Is there any chance you'll write another O.S.,NG, DS9 or Voyager again?

I think it would hard to top the way they treat Hitler in "Little Nicky".

As always I find myself looking forward to the next New Frontier novel. I'm reading Michael Jan Friedman's "Death in Winter" and got a little excited in the beginning when the Praetor refers to her agent as the "half-breed", almost expected Soleta instead of Sela. I didn't think the Romulans would ever put her in charge of anything again after so many screw-ups.

Posted by: Thomas E. Reed at October 8, 2005 05:08 AM

Although the reply is late, let me say that I have nothing against anime. I DO have something against people adapting anime stylization because it's the "hot" thing to do, whether or not it's appropriate to the material. My only contention is that this supposed "Buffy" series would work best as a straight animated series, without "super-deformed" anything. Let the characters keep their shape and not change artistic styles, so we don't get pulled out of the seriousness of the story. (As was done, for example, in one of the most respected anime series, "Cowboy Bebop.")

A series like "Teen Titans" works with a more exaggerated anime form, because they're supposed to be laughing-out-loud funny at times. I don't think Buffy fans are looking for a "laff riot."

Wasn't PAD talking about working on an animated series about a year ago...one that didn't happen at the time for whatever reason.

And hasn't there been talk recently about another animated series that suddenly can't use certain characters any longer? Ones that have been used before but are suddenly off-limits. Ones that PAD may have had a "hand" in over the years.

I'm just sayin' is all.
