This just in...

TOKYO (July 3) - Japanese coast guard officials said Sunday they believe an underwater volcanic eruption has caused a 3,300-foot high column of steam to rise from the Pacific Ocean near Iwo Jima.

The vapor was reported Saturday after Japanese troops stationed on the small island observed the massive, cloudy plume rise from the sea about 30 miles southeast of the island, said Maritime Self-Defense Forces Hiroshi Shirai.

Defense officials who flew over the area in a helicopter said the surface of the water appeared red where the column was reported, which could indicate underwater volcanic activity, Shirai said.

Okay, now honestly...am I the only person who read this and thought it'd be cool if Godzilla emerged from the midst of the smoke?

Does thinking Shogun Warriors first instead of Godzilla make me less geeky or more geeky?

Up from the depths, 40 stories high.......

:)

Posted by: Jerry at July 3, 2005 03:53 PM

Ian,

Only cool if it was Mazinga. Maybe Dragon or Raideen running up in the second and third "kinda cool" spots. After that it's pure geek out.

Posted by: Michael Pullmann at July 3, 2005 03:58 PM

No, you are not.

Now I have to find a way to patch into the Japanese news services to see if any of their reporters stand in the middle of the street and shout, "It's Godzillaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!"

Whatever happens, I hope Raymond Burr stays out of it.

What?!?

Let Raymond Burr do whatever the man wants to do. Keep Matthew Broderick away from it.

How 'bout Godzilla rises out of the smoke then that red & grey robot dude with the fin-head falls from out of the sky and drop-kicks 'zilla in the head?

Is there even a red & grey robot dude with a fin-head in those flicks or am I making this up?

Posted by: TallestFanEver at July 3, 2005 06:06 PM

Now I have to find a way to patch into the Japanese news services to see if any of their reporters stand in the middle of the street and shout, "It's Godzillaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!"

I have a sneaking suspicion it happens all the time and they just don't tell us about it. "The Japanese stock markets took an unexpected turn downards today." Why? GODZILLA! "The North American import of The Legend of Zelda was delayed by Nintendo for several months." Why? GODZILLA!

Posted by: Jerry at July 3, 2005 06:40 PM

The big robot dude was a personal fave of mine as well. But he would help the big G, not attack him.

"Classification: Robotic Kaiju"

Oh, man. I have no idea what a "Robotic Kaiju" is, but I do know that its pure, concentrated awesomeness. Hey, PAD, I humbly suggest you work in a "Robotic Kaiju" into something. Anything. I dunno how, I don't know why. It would just rule.

Posted by: Jerry at July 3, 2005 07:47 PM

From the Godzilla Biology page:

"What is a kaiju (kie-ju)? It's a Japanese word for "mysterious beast". Daikaiju means "giant mysterious beast"."

I thought the robot was Red Ronin. Or was that only in the comics?

Posted by: Jerry at July 3, 2005 10:31 PM

Just the Marvel comics had Red Ronin. It was the S.H.I.E.L.D. answer to all the monsters.

Look up the link in my post about Jet Jaguar and it will give you way more information about most the Godzilla monsters then any normal mind would want to have (thus my knowledge of the site.)

Posted by: Jason Allen at July 3, 2005 10:52 PM

As I was reading the report, I first thought that it was a weapons test gone wrong. Towards the end, though, I was definitely thinking of Godzilla. There are no words to adequately describe how awesome that would be. Can you just imagine anchormen and women having to report, seriously, that Godzilla was attacking Japan? I'd call off work just to watch the news and see the looks of "I can't believe I have to say these words on the air."

Posted by: Scott Iskow at July 3, 2005 11:19 PM

Either that, or Aquaman's pissed off again.

"They would be shouting Gojira, not Godzilla. And yes, I was a fanboy of the stuff years ago."

Depends. The later films saw the Japanese print the name as "Godzilla" on their signs and displays. OK, maybe for export, but even so ... And i'd swear the secret service twit at the end of the (Japanese version) GODZILLA 2000 does shout GODZILLAAAAAA instead of GOJIRAAAAAAA. Unfortunately, the North American DVD doesn't have the original Japanese soundtrack as an option. :p If I could only dig up that fan-subbed tape version from my archives...

Posted by: Alan Wilkinson at July 4, 2005 04:52 AM

Fairly sure it was 30 stories, but I've been wrong before.

And I'd happily support a giant lizard destroying Tokyo as long as someone is around to tape the event.

(Incedentially, in the most recent issue of 'Monster World' magazine, Godzilla had an 'Ultimate Battle' with Optimus Prime.

Prime won.

Posted by: Christine at July 4, 2005 08:05 AM

Very cool so long as Godzilla stays far away from Madison Square Garden. ;)

Just have to wonder how the press would cover the story. I'd hate to be the reporter sent to get the exclusive interview with Godzilla! LOL

Posted by: Matt Dow at July 4, 2005 08:18 AM

So, I see the title: "This Just In..."

And I read: "TOKYO (July 3) - Japanese coast guard officials said Sunday they believe an underwater volcanic eruption has caused a 3,300-foot high column of steam to rise from the Pacific Ocean near Iwo Jima."

And I just KNEW the post was gonna end with "Oh no, it's GODZILLA!!!"

Funny funny funny.

If he didn't get too pissed off about being the spring board for the worst Justice League story since Power Girl's child, I don't see what could piss him off that much.

BTW: I lost your email, please email me.

"Fairly sure it was 30 stories, but I've been wrong before."

Probably right. Toho studios have admitted to changing him from one incarnation to the next. He's been through at least three changes over the decades and the latest - with the re-introduction following the Godawful American version - had him shrunk down to a 'mere' 180 feet.

1You know, with the exception of the Tsunmi, EVERYTHING that's an underwater disaster remainds me of Godzilla. A few years, I heard a story about a whale washing up onto a California beach and something had bitten a chunk out of it's side: Godzilla, I thought. When that Russian sub sank: Godzilla. When the Titantic went down, you guessed it.
I've been thinking about Godzilla even before the movies came out. So I'm the biggest geek of all! HAHA.

Posted by: Bill Mulligan at July 4, 2005 02:41 PM

It could also be Gamera, the giant turtle. Gamera is a friend to all children.

Gamera! Gamera!
Gamera is really neat.
Gamera is filled with meat.
We've been eating Gamera!
Shell
Teeth
Eyes
Flames
Claws
Breath
Scales

If anyone can find a copy, Godzilla: Final Wars is a must see for Godzilla fans.

Godzilla fights a variety of monsters up to and including.. the american Tri-Star Godzilla (and CGI to boot). I kid you not, it really IS in the movie.

Posted by: Jerry at July 4, 2005 04:16 PM

"Fairly sure it was 30 stories, but I've been wrong before."

Nah. I'm sure my memory is bad on this one. It's the first few lines from the old NBC Godzilla cartoon. I haven't seen the thing in 25 years easy so I may be a wee off on the wording.

Posted by: gene hall at July 4, 2005 04:38 PM

How about having the Iron Chefs battling to cook something in the volcanic steam?

Posted by: Luke K. walsh at July 4, 2005 05:02 PM

Suddenly, the Godzilla digression a few of us got into on the "Hold Your Breath" thread seems a lot more relevent ... :)

Yes, the big G is the first thing I thought of, too. And cool that so many others here have some interest in Godzilla, too. Reminiscences, links - and people even remember Red Ronin! Wow. (Marvel's Godzilla was one of the first comics I collected as a kid, and I'd still say issue #6 - with some POV from sympathetic Godzila hunter Gabe Jones in the story by Doug Moench with beautiful art by Herb Trimpe - I believe the only issue of the series in which he inked his own pencils - is one of the better individual comics I've read. But, I digress ....)

And Alan Wilkinson - they seriously said Optimus Prime would win?? That's bull, Monster World. I doubt MEGATRON could beat Godzilla, let alone Oppy ....

(Oddly, I have had the idea of a "Godzilla vs. the Transformers" fanfic in my head for a little while now .... I certainly didn't have one Transformer beating him, though.)

Not sure where to post this one so I'm sticking it in here.

Does anybody here remember (dumb question alert) The Adventures of Luther Arkwright? A company called Big Finish has just put out a three CD set based on the comic. Full cast with SFX. They've been doing great stuff with other properties over the last few years and I think (CD unheard but damn sure) that fans of The Adventures of Luther Arkwright will love this.

If you don't know who Big Finish is then you need to go to their website NOW. You'll love me forever for it (well, until your bank account hit $0.00 at anyrate.)

Oh, yeah.

It's under the new world section. The rest is worth a look too.

My copy won't show up until the end of the month (splurged for the Special Edition DVD :) , but I would make the recommendation that people check out GMK: Godzilla-Mothera-King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack. This movie not only makes the big G relevant in today's world, but it also makes him one scary summa-gun!! Also, this was the first Japanese G film that put TriStar's GINO into continuity. Added bonus, you can find this movie in US stores now! Highly recommended!!

As for the "who beats who", I would not presume to choose a winner, but I'd *LOVE* to see Godzilla take on Ultraman. That would be killer sweet!!!!

Ok; time to stop being otaku and make to work...

Schwatch!!

Posted by: The StarWolf at July 5, 2005 04:23 PM

Gamera? Naww ... give me Mothra instead. That flying shag carpet moth is almost as silly as the fire-breathing, flying tutrle, but those twin pixies of Mothra's sure aren't hard to look at. ;-)

As for the big G, saw WAR OF THE WORLDS last night and my first thought upon seeing a tripod show up was "OK, where's Godzilla when you really need him?"

Not in the Godzilla movies, but in syndicated television: you're thinking of UltraMan, who was fifty feet tall and fought all sorts of silly giant monsters, but not Godzilla.

Not technically true. Watch episode 10 of the original Ultraman series and tell me Jirass doesn't look just a tinsey bit familiar... :)

Posted by: Marc Mielke at July 6, 2005 07:54 PM

I think a giant robot Iron Chef series would work.

The four chefs combine their powers to form Mecha-Kaga, complete with Yellow Pepper missiles, and the robotic chefs battle, then cook tasty and inventive dishes out of the kaiju of the week.

If that was the first thing that came to your mind at this potential disaster, I shudder to think what your first thought was at Katrina...perhaps something about Black Manta?

Posted by: Rob Staeger at September 18, 2006 02:18 PM

There's a big difference between a genuine disaster and a potential disaster.

But I do admite your ability to reach back in time to be offended. Quite a leap.
