Hulk the Barbarian...

HULK081cvr_gs_100.jpg

Behold Lee Weeks original pencils of the cover for issue #81. A tribute to Frazetta's oft-hommaged Molly Hatchet cover, it gets my vote as "Cover Most Likely To Be a t-shirt by next year."

Heh. Fantastic.

Posted by: Ian Neve at January 21, 2005 04:23 AM

This is so cool. It embodies the very reason why PAD should be THE Hulk writer, he does the unexpected whilst still staying true to the character. Other writers say to be different just don't put Hulk in his own book.

I laughed out loud when I saw this. The Hulk's posture (and what you can see of his face) just screams "nonplussed"

Posted by: Guido at January 21, 2005 04:42 AM

That's one mighty strong horse to carry Hulk.

Lovely stuff! Larger, wallpaper version of that would be great...

Perfect cover. Hoping Weeks and David team has a nice strong run.

Awesome cover!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do a little dance...

Posted by: Micko at January 21, 2005 08:58 AM

I hope the horse is a Horse-hulk too. Has to be pretty strong.

Posted by: Jason K at January 21, 2005 11:19 AM

Well considering the horse is as tall as the hulk, and given the Hulk is what 8 or 9 feet tall that's a Hulk Horse.

Posted by: Peter David at January 21, 2005 11:22 AM

Y'know all the times that people say to me, "And the horse you rode in on?" That's the horse.

I love it! Graphitti Designs is probably making the shirt, even as we speak!!

I liked it. Hell, you even used an idea I came up with a long time ago, that of using a paint-filled bullet to knock someone down without killing them in order to make everyone think he was dead. Have you been reading my mind, Petet? :-)

Posted by: Matt Adler at January 21, 2005 03:28 PM

Maybe the horse was subjected to the same experiments as the Hulk poodles.

Hey, the Superman Family had a dog, a cat, a horse, and God knows what else... high time the Hulk got a gammenagerie.

It also wins the award for 'original art I'm most likely to try and buy off Lee Weeks in the coming year.'

Terrific!

Posted by: J. Alexander at January 21, 2005 04:13 PM

Now, this is a cover that should increase sales.
Weeks has improved heavily since the first days his art was being published by Marvel. Didn't Weeks draw a couple of THE DESTROYER comic?

What's with all the irrelavent "homages" on Hulk covers recently? Well, at least it's not another one by Kaare Andrews.

Posted by: Johnny Fuller at January 21, 2005 04:37 PM

Ok, now this is what I call having fun. Doing alot of interesting things with a character who is wide open to doing alot of wild and crazy things. This takes me back to the Hulk ruling that island on the Florida Keys and serving as a god for the tribe in the Savage Land. Hulk is a wild guy so let him do wild things. This is just great.

That looks awesome!

Hey if it does become a T-Shirt, I'll buy it!

Posted by: RobB at January 21, 2005 06:33 PM

That is an incredibly fanboy inspiring cover. Absolutely wonderful.

Put me down for one Large.

thanks!

I think Lee Weeks is one of the best and one of the most underappreciated artist working today. He has a great style, wonderful drawing ability and can tell a good story.
If this run on the Hulk is a smash hit (pun intended) it could give him the rep as a "top artist".
So Mr David, it is up to you to write a great story and give Mr. Weeks the fame he deserves.

Its a great image, but I like the "apologies to" part the most.

Posted by: Evan at January 22, 2005 06:26 PM

Love the cover. Love the fact that you're back on Hulk, since the early part of your original run was the first comic I ever collected regularly. And just another opinion on something someone else brought up, the Kaare Andrews homage covers were one of the few things I liked about that run. So now, great covers and Peter David? I'm sold.

Personally, I'd love to see a picture from an older Hulk comic - one where Hulk & the Pantheon were invading a country, and Hulk appeared with a BIG gun & pink bunny slippers - arranged for a t-shirt or poster.

the Molly Hatchet cover can be seen at "HER" (yes, that is a joke) front page

Very cool,Please keep having fun and different stuff happening with the hulkster.Lord knows the other writers that have had recent runs didnt.

Hey PAD, I'm the guy who was talking with you on the Newsarama boards (Mr. Green). Anyways that art looks pretty cool... I have no idea in which you are going to take the story and I was looking at the next few covers of the Hulk and saw the most overused character ever. Sounds interesting.

Posted by: Richard Perez at January 25, 2005 01:52 PM

Lee Weeks did a great job there. PAD and Weeks make a great team.
