I'll be at two of New England Comics' stores tomorrow, promoting the new Madrox series as well as Fallen Angel. I'll be appearing at the store in Brockton, MA, at 2:30 PM, and at the store on Harvard Street in Brookline at 6 PM. C'mon by, say hi.
PAD
Peter. Listen to me very, very carefully. The NEC store on Harvard Street in Brookline: it's right across the street from a restaurant named Zaftigs Deli.
You and your companion will go there for dinner. You will, if you're particularly wise, order the Zaftigs Combo and the salmon cakes for appetizers. But the only truly smart thing you need to do is walk in there and order.
The food there is (a) reasonably-priced, and (b) incapacitatingly good. Check out the menu at www.zaftigs.com.
On your way in or out, look for a large bronze plaque between the restaurant and the first park bench next to that block. It is probably one of my five favorite historical markers in the Boston area, which is saying something.
Coolidge Corner (the neighborhood you'll be visiting) is a great spot to walk around in. It features Boston's best movie house as well as (IMHO) its best independent bookstore (the Brookline Booksmith, across the street from the theater).
But take me at my word re: Zaftigs. A couple of years ago, I brought a visiting pal there, unaware that she had switched to a vegetarian diet a couple of years earlier. It wouldn't be a total loss; Z has a small but decent vegetarian menu. She took a look through the menu. She took a look at the dishes being served to other tables. And then she uttered a line which I often repeat:
"I think tonight, just for this one meal...I'm not a vegetarian."
I'll be there in Brockton! Really looking forward to it.
Won't be fanboyish about it, but will be my first comic pro meet!
i completely agree with the rave review of zaftig's. i live about 10 minutes away from it, and it is the best jewish food in boston. coolidge corner is a fun area, but but best bookstore and best movie theatre may be a bit of an overestimation. i am very sad because i live 10 minutes from the store Peter will be signing at, and yet have to leave town at about the same time for a wedding. and i just bought every issue of fallen angel recently, too!!! hope everyone else has better luck than i do and can attend the signing tonight.
Ahh, New England Comics. Well I remember going to their Allston store every week in high school. Picked up many of your early Spider-Man books there, Peter.
If you'd been there last Friday, I'd have come round to the Brookline store, but I've returned to the left coast since then. Ah, well.
Holy. Frelling. Dren.
You're going to be in Brockton? That's like 20 minutes from me!!
I think I might be able to convince my husband to take a trip out tomorrow, even through the rain. It's not like we had anything planned, other than playing Sly 2.
Umm...Julia, it was TODAY that he was at Brockton, not tomorrow.
Peter,
It was great meeting you at the Brockton store yesterday. (Me: glasses, goatee, plaid shirt; had you sign a copy of Madrox for my buddy who couldn't make it to the signing.)
And I dug the first issue of Madrox. I'm hooked; I'm in! This Mutant Gumshoe is going to be fun. I hope to see more of the ratiocination you gave us a glimpse of in this issue.
Thanks again,
Mark
