An Announcement from Peter

This weekend Peter is at the Motor City Comic Con and he is making THE BIG ANNOUNCEMENT about the secret project that he has been working on for Marvel.
This will be revealed on Saturday at his Noon talk in Speaking Room #2.
I know what it is and have seen the art work. All I can say is that it knocked my socks off.

So go by and say Hi to Peter. On Saturday and Sunday ask to see the pictures of the kids. He will have some really cute ones.

Which means that if I check the internet at Noon:01, I should have the long-awaited, breath-abated, eagerly anticipated... where was I going with this?

Cool. I wish there were more conventions around my part of the country. That's why there's the internet, I suppose, because news always pops up quickly during these things.

My prediction, Ultimate Howard the Duck.

Cool. I always new it would be possible to cross the Three Blind Mice with Daredevil and make it work.

And they said I was mad!

Not related, but I've seen no mention of the new Spy Boy comic that came out last week (best issue of Spy Boy yet, I thought...I've run hot and cold on the series, but that one was great)...Found a review PAD should read....

"One thing I always know when I go to a comic shop is that if it is written by Peter David, it will always be a good read. "

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to the motor city convention, which I used to attend regularly, because of work. I'd like to, but since I don't get paid when I take days off on the weekend, am taking a weekend off in june, and have bills to pay, I can't really afford to take off an additional two days.

So, I will not be there when PAD announces that he'll be writing the new, grim and gritty ALF 2099 series. Perhaps you've seen the tagline teasing the series: "Just when you thought it was safe to get a cat...."

Very cool. Ill be at the Con on Sat, so Ill hopefully be lucky enough to catch what it is.

My money is on the new and revamped Marvel Knight's version of Angel Love. (Little known fact that Marvel secretly acquired the rights to this DC title in their attempt to bring out the grim and gritty potential of this character.)

My guess: Havoc, since it's X-Men related and it's a character he's worked on before, in X-Factor.

Wait a minute. That was an actual serious guess. Must be something wrong with the irony filter on the site.

Hmm... JMS has been promising to reveal *his* new project on May 15, and PAD has written for B5... could be, could be.

Spoke with Peter for a few today, got to hear the wonderful story about child projectile vomiting in the rental car. Thanks for the great laugh!

Posted by: J. Alexander at May 14, 2004 06:59 PM

My guess is that with Peter's experience in writing demons (see SOULSEARCHERS & COMPANY), that Marvel will license from Harvey the rights to do ULTIMATE HOT STUFF. It should be a devil of a good book. I can't wait until the third or fourth arc in which it is finally revealed that Hot Stuff is truly the son of the Son Of Satan.

Posted by: Matt Adler at May 14, 2004 07:10 PM

Hmm... so is this the mutant book, or something else?

'Cause if it's the mutant book, my bet is on Quicksilver.

With a possibility of Multiple Man.

I was going to say a Strong Guy series, but the JMS thing has the gears in my mind turning (which is always a scary thing:)
JMS and PAD together again?
That would be awesome.

Posted by: Jonathan at May 14, 2004 11:09 PM

Heh, I don't see how Straczynski's B5 project could be connected to PAD's Marvel project. That being said I'd love to see PAD and JMS doing something together, I kept hoping for Amazing Spidey / Captain Marvel crossover but that never happened.

Posted by: joelfinkle at May 14, 2004 11:28 PM

Dang, that is a detail I overlooked. He did say it's a Marvel project... and JMS's announcement has been implied to be Babylon 5-related.

I had considered not going to the con because of the expense of gasoline. I bought gas at $1.699 last week, but this week it is $2.169 just down the street from me. I don't know how some people can still afford to drive a car.

But I guess I will spend the money and go on Sunday, as I must work on Saturday.

Posted by: Lee Houston, Junior at May 15, 2004 01:08 AM

"ULTIMATE Howard the Duck"?
"ALF 2099: Just when you thought it was safe to get a cat..."
LOL! LOL! LOL! LOL! LOL!, etc.
Jokingly, how about Marvel restarting the Star Comics Line, and Peter gets to do TOP DOG!
Although ideally, his talents would be better suited for a revival of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends.
Dreamingly, Peter returns to the Hulk as the regular writer, but in reality, Peter has already said he's only doing a Hulk mini-series.
Guess it would be too much to hope for "Moondragon and Marlo: The Series".
But IF it is something with Straczynski AT Marvel, what if Peter starts scripting Amazing Spider-man or Squadron Supreme over JMS' plots?

Kathleen, for those of us who won't be able to be there, can you tell us how soon after the annoucement at the con will it be made here? I'd really like to know when to look forward to it.

Perhaps Peter can write it in advance, and then just post it quickly after he makes it at the con? Just a suggestion from a die-hard fan. :-)

Luigi-
Peter is suppose to call me before he goes to the convention today. I'll ask him about it then.
We had an interesting use for cell phones this morning. Ariel had to get up at 4:30AM since today is her show choir's trip to Six Flags. Caroline tends to be an early riser, but we didn't want her rising that early. So I gave Ariel my cell phone. She put it next to her bed. Peter left a wake up call at the Hotel for 4:30AM. He phoned Ariel waking her up but letting the baby and me sleep until Caroline got up at 6:30AM.

Posted by: Brian at May 15, 2004 08:16 PM

Hello,
Just got back from the Motor City Comic Con in Novi, MI where Peter David revealed his mystery Marvel book in his session today at noon.

It's called Madrox, featuring Jamie Madrox, the Multiple Man with Rayhne Sinclair and Strong Guy as supporting characters in this as PAD put it, "crime-noir detective story in the ghettos of Mutant Town." It will be a five part limited series and if it does well then PAD can prove and ask for an ongoing series.

I can't recall the artist's name but he's done some work for Marvel in the past but nothing noteworthy enough for me to recall.

Posted by: Rich Johnston at May 15, 2004 08:17 PM

Formerly Known As X-Factor, you see...

Posted by: Tim Lynch at May 15, 2004 08:22 PM

Looking forward to it -- congrats, PAD!

I stated:
"I can't recall the artist's name but he's done some work for Marvel in the past but nothing noteworthy enough for me to recall."

I didn't mean to make the artist's work sound poor, because in fact it looks great. But I've never seen enough of his work or his name for me to keep it stuck in my head.

Also, PAD shared some great insight on the Hulk special he's doing as well.

Just getting back from the con too (I left awhile ago but my friends and I went elsewhere afterwards). I really enjoyed Mr. David's segment, he was highly entertaining and was able to hold the audience's attention very well. I am not really a marvel fan, so the inner-workings of the Marvel Universe are unknown to me. So I am not usually interested in most things marvel, however from some of the art, as well as the energy of the room I am fairly intrigued in MadroX.

I'll most likely be picking it up.

Not much else to add, he gave out a bunch of little details about the project but because I don't really know much in the way of the M.U. the details meant little to me. They did, however excite the people in the audience. I would post the details I remembered, but I wouldn't do them justice, so I will refrain.

The artist is Pablo Raimondi. His Marvel work includes the Ben Raab Excalibur mini, the Weapon X Kane one-shot, and contributions to the Marvel and X-Men Millenial Visions projects. Here's some of his art:

Posted by: Luigi Novi at May 15, 2004 10:08 PM

Not bad. Peter's too-brief run on X-Factor was one of his best and funniest runs on a comic, a tiny exception of resonance, plausibility and humor in a mutant franchise that had grown far too homogenous, implausible, and anhedonic.

It wsa my favorite comic work by him after Hulk, and I only wish Quicksilver, Havok and Polaris were in it too.

Can't wait to read it.

Posted by: Michael Pullmann at May 15, 2004 11:01 PM

Coolness. Very much enjoyed Peter's X-Factor (what little of it I read; I'm tracking the rest down), and this oughta be fun. Might not get an ongoing, since it overlaps with Mutant X a bit, but it'll still get my money.

I agree with Lugui about wishing that Quicksilver, Havok and Polaris would be back in the fold but PAD said they were already spoken for.
BTW, anyone know what the old X-Factor artist during PAD's run, Larry Stroham (spelling?), is up to lately? He split from Marvel and did some book for Image (I think?) then I haven't heard or seen from him since.

Posted by: Matt Adler at May 16, 2004 12:10 AM

I think you mean District X.

There's an easy solution to your dilemma; drop District X and get MadroX instead.

Posted by: Greg Fischer at May 16, 2004 02:18 AM

Regarding the Hulk artist, PAD said he didn't remember his name, so no further information there.

Posted by: Rob at May 16, 2004 03:53 AM

oh cool, I loved the second generation X-Factor, it was the other X-Title I read other then The (New)X-Men. Great to see that these three characters are coming back, although I would also like to see Peter's take on the now crazed Polaris and "I went to an alternate dimension and all I got was this evil personality" Havok. Maybe he can borrow them from X-Men. Can't see why not, considering Wolverine can be on all three teams.

Posted by: Dennis V. at May 16, 2004 05:15 AM

I'll pick up the new Madrox mini, but I just can't imagine this series selling all that well to warrant an ongoing series. Best of luck though.

Posted by: Wildcat at May 16, 2004 08:45 AM

I like the concept of a Madrox series, and the characters involved, though I imagine a few of the New Mutants (now New X-Men) fans will feel a bit cheated that Rahne is being removed from that title (though she'll get *far* more "face time" than she will in a cast with literally a dozen characeters). ;)

I can't wait to see where PAD takes this!

Posted by: Greg Fischer at May 16, 2004 10:15 AM

For the first series, PAD said he won't be using any of the other X-Men since they are being used by other writers. I also have to say that the art samples I saw were incredible.

Peter, I just wanted to say thank you for signing my comic and selling me your last copy of your 3rd Sir Apropos book. It was a pleasure meeting you. The irony (or what I see as irony) is that I saw myself as that shy comic fan from your But I Digress article you read at the session. I've never gone up and talked to a celebrity before, primarily because I just don't know what to say. Also, your session was very entertaining and the Lord of the Rings as done by Monty Python was absolutely hilarious.

Posted by: Alex Clarke at May 16, 2004 11:45 AM

Darn! I was hoping the project was an Ultimate version of Superpro!

Posted by: John DiBello at May 16, 2004 12:54 PM

I'm well aware of how stupid a question this is in reference to super-hero comics, but didn't Madrox die sometime in the post-PAD X-FACTOR?

If so, does anyone know how/when they brought him back?

Don't get me wrong; I'm only just curious. I'd much rather see a character handled by a creator I enjoy than languish in character-limbo. And Strong Guy coming back? Hoo hoo! Sign me up for that.

Posted by: Jam at May 16, 2004 01:56 PM

Uh, he's Madrox The Multiple Man, the Madrox that died was a dupe. Simple as that.

Killing off Madrox is impossible. I long ago decided that the REAL Madrox is living a normal married life somewhere in the midwest while various dupes go about acting like they're the original and no one is the wiser. :D

There's also the Madrox who works as a Fireman in Denver, and the one who's a cop in Seattle, but they're another story.

Madrox is the greatest character, he's the guy who actually can do EVERYTHING he ever wanted to. Be a super hero. A teacher. A cop. A fireman. He's got a dupe doing each one. And one that lives in New Orleans and gets plastered 24-7.

Posted by: Matt Adler at May 16, 2004 03:48 PM

Here's a bio for MadroX. It should answer all questions:

Thanks, Matt! Answered all my questions. I totally forgot Madrox was in NEW X-MEN, which I did read.

Posted by: Michael Pullmann at May 16, 2004 06:10 PM

Matt sez: "I think you mean District X.

There's an easy solution to your dilemma; drop District X and get MadroX instead."

Right, District X. Which I'm not getting anyway, just for budget reasons. But, the similarity with Madrox might make Marvel balk at publishing two ongoings with the same setup.

Then again, the setup for the ongoing might turn out to be completely different from what we see in the mini.

Posted by: Jam at May 16, 2004 06:39 PM

This is the company with 4 books with the words X-Men in their titles.

I'm not worried about similarity in theme.

And District X seems to have a much more serious tone than I expect MadroX to have. I'm not saying MadroX will be a laugh riot, just that anything with Strong Guy is GOING to have a little humor, something Bishop As The Mutant Cop won't have.

Posted by: Mike M. at May 16, 2004 07:32 PM

Multiple Man, Multiple Man, Does whatever a Multiple Man can! I am definitely excited about this news! I am a huge fan of PAD's X-Factor (my first PAD title and my first X-title...). As soon as I saw this announcement on newsarama I e-mailed my comic shop to add it to my hold list.

Posted by: Meatmunk at May 16, 2004 10:44 PM

Well, I can honestly say that Multiple Man was never anyone I was very interested in, but the fact that Wolfsbane is a supporting character is probably as close I will get to seeing her own series. =p

Plus I always liked Strong Guy, too. So I am on board for the long haul. Just be sure to include lots of Rahne, please. =D

Posted by: Daniel McCormick at May 16, 2004 11:04 PM

EXCELLENT! I'd hoped that this secret new project would be a MULTIPLE MAN title. You could tell Peter had a lot of fun with the character, especially when the second issue ended with: "He's not Multiple Man. I'M Multiple Man." I loved the fight issue that followed, especially with the Kermit sucker punch in the Smithsonian.

Great choice! I know I'll be on board for all five issues. :)

Meanwhile, while I'm looking forward to MadroX myself, is there any chance of there ever being a "Moondragon and Marlo" title?
Just curious.

Posted by: Alan Wilkinson at May 17, 2004 06:36 AM

Hope PAD doesn't mind his thunder being stolen.

Then again, he's not stupid. He must know that saying "feel free to spread" will have such info all over the net in 5 minutes, tops.

"Oh yeah, and I really liked the comment about Fallen Angel's Identity"

Which was?

Oh, and what the hell's a Madro/MadroX?

Alan.

Posted by: Wildcat at May 17, 2004 06:59 AM

I shared the news on the New X-Men (formerly New Mutants) site, and one of the writers of *that* book indicated that they've still got Rahne for the long haul, though she was careful to say that she couldn't comment on PAD's announcement. So it would appear that, if the Madrox series becomes an unlimited series, Wolfsbane would be there only for the initial kick-off.

I'm not complaining. The character is in good hands in either instance, and I doubt the Madrox book would suffer from her absence. ;)

Posted by: Jack at May 17, 2004 09:49 AM

While I have never been much of a fan of Rahne, and I've always been kind of indifferent towards Madrox (although PAD made him more interesting than anyone else to use the character), I am going to pick this one up for one reason: Strong Guy! I've always loved PADs use of him. A very funny character, with a tragic side, as well, that I am hoping will be looked into. No other writer has ever done Guido justice, IMO.

Posted by: Kitty at May 17, 2004 11:16 AM

Best news ever! Jamie is still my favorite X-character of all time, and PAD's run of X-Factor still has a special spot in my fangirly heart. Hooray! Thanks for taking this on, Peter!

What we firmly establish is that Rahne is still working up at the school, but she's also helping Jamie part-time to help him get his office up and running. Makes sense to me. No reason to say that Rahne spends all her time in one place.

The thing is that if something major is going to happen with Rahne, it'll occur in the parent book since they're in "first position" with her. For instance, if she hadn't gotten her powers back, she couldn't have them back in "Madrox."

Cool news.

Do I remember that this series is under Tom Breevort's office?

Just patting myself on the back here. I posted on this site that I was hoping it was Madrox the day it was announced that Peter was doing a Marvel mutant book. I will reiterate now that he has the most untapped potential in his powers out of any Marvel character. Very excited!

Very cool announcement, PAD. I always loved your X-Factor run. I thought it was some of your best work.
Good luck with this!

Thanks, Peter! It's always nice to have a little fact to look to to prevent my making a further @$$ of myself. ;)

It seems the NXM boardies that have commented are all excited about this news -- I think I may be the *only* one there who actually likes all three characters, but every other poster is a Big Fan of Jamie or Guido or Rahne, but not really all that enamoured of one or both of the others. This is a great opportunity to sell them on the *whole* cast!

While I'm thinking of it, this would be a good time to whip those folks into a "remind your retailer early and often" frenzy. :D

It was reported once that when Papa Pete took over X-Factor with #70, it was Peter David meeting the children of Atom and that his effort cleaned up all of the storylines from so many creative teams. The work that Peter contributed with X afterwards was shear revelation! Looks like we will have Papa Pete to the rescue once more this time.
Definitely a must read!

Excuse me. I don't currently read any of the X books (though I plan on getting this series). Can someone tell me what MUTANT TOWN is?

Basically like Chinatown, but with mutants.

Hey if Mary Jane can get her own series, why can't Moondragon and Marlo? I really hope Marvel asks him to replace Jones as the Hulk writer. If not permanant maybe another ongoing regular Hulk series instead of a Limited one!

If peter does a hulk run it needs to be out of regular continuity. I grew up reading his orginal run and was agast as various creative teams compleatly destroyed everything he built over dozen year period. I don't think he could recapture the magic he had in his initial run unless he spent a long time restructing the series. Besides the best hulk story Peter told never made into comics. I would pay a fortune to have him write a twelve issue mini on his novel What Savage beast. I don't wish to spoil the novel for those that havent read it but it's quite possibly the most emotional story I have ever read. Evey time I read it I am always emotionally drained afterwords. I would much rather have peter work on a project like this than return to the regualar book.
