YOU CAN STOP TELLING ME

I've got at least five e-mails from folks telling me that Joe Quesada made no mention of "Captain Marvel" in his Newsarama interview, and didn't list me in his X-Mas song even though he mentioned just about every other living person currently employed by Marvel. Which is being seen as a snub and not a good sign of things to come. Which it probably was.

So you can stop telling me now. Okay?

Oh Jeez... not another cancellation please. I want to see where you're taking Marv and Rick. Is there any way for them to cancel this book after u-decide without loosing their face, as -- according to sales -- you obviously won the whole thing?

Ouch.

Personally, I don't like the big corporations, be they Marvel, Starbucks, or Viacom/Paramount.

PAD - Do you think you'd be better off publishing more of your work through the smaller, independent companies (such as they are)? Or it it not worth losing Marvel's reliable distribution net?

I didn't listen to the X-mas song, but since neither Black Panther or Spider-Girl were mentioned in the newsarama interview, I wouldn't read too much into that.

Spider-Girl and Black Panther are not real good company to be in. Let's set aside creative worth, but both of these titles have been tittering on the edge of cancellation for a while now. Besides, they were not renewed this year as CM was.

This is what the internet does to my brain:

I saw you speak at MIT once but I have never read a single book of yours or paid much attention to your work (which isn't meant as a slight). But, the very first thing that came to mind after listening to the song and reading the lyrics was, "Hey, he didn't mention Peter David." Now, why the hell is that? :)

You could always just...you know, ask him why you were left out.

Regardless, I thought it was an interesting and nice treat for Marvel/Comic fans.

I would. Priest and his artist were mentioned in the Christmas song, as well as Chris Cross. Which was the clincher. This was definitely a message to PAD.

Oh, and DeFalco and his artist were mentioned too.

Can someone tell me just what does Joe Quesada have against PAD? Aside the whole Captain Marvel thing. Its like Marvel actively doesn't want good writers around.

Posted by: T at December 23, 2002 07:43 AM

He didn't thank Bill Jemas either. Methinks it's a U-Decide thing.

Posted by: Elayne Riggs at December 23, 2002 09:08 AM

I wouldn't read too much into it. He didn't mention Robin either. *sob*

Posted by: Bob DeGraff at December 23, 2002 09:39 AM

I can already see Joe and Bill trying to rationalize the fact that they're losing in U-Decide by saying that the readers of their books are just holding out for the trade paperbacks. Joe did keep bringing up the fact in the Newsrama interview that the Diamond numbers don't include any trade paperback sales and that he expects Ultimate Adventures to do quite well as a trade paperback. He didn't mention his expectations for a Captain Marvel trade.

I think it's time for PAD Publishing and the PAD comic universe. :)

Posted by: BigCheese at December 23, 2002 03:53 PM

Well, they recently announced TPBs for both marville and Ultimate Adventures, but not Captain Marvel, which just goes to show you how "fair" this thing is. I think they¿re behaving like ten-year olds in this matter. But sadly, that doesn't even come as a surprise anymore.

>Well, they recently announced >TPBs for both marville and >Ultimate Adventures, but not >Captain Marvel,

Actually, I think Marvel had already announced a Captain Marvel TPB (for Vol. 4 #1-6). I can't find a Marvel link to it at the moment but you can see it at Amazon:

Perhaps you were left out of Joe Q.'s little song, but today's ODDBALL COMIC column is entirely dedicated to one of your odder HULK stories. Hope it brightens your day a teensy bit!

- I know what you mean, 'BigCheese'... I remember when I used to be PROUD to be a Marvel fan. Boy, those were the days...

I think it's because Joe is McFarlane's buddy and he's trying to get even with Peter about that debate that Peter had with Todd where Todd came out acting like a Jackass and Peter proceeded to show the world that McFarlane was really just a flea on a jackass's back side.

Or it could be just another of Quesada's jackass attempts to create more publicity for Marvel.

Seems to be working.

Is anyone else amused by the recommendation for other customers on this page?

I read Joey Q's interview, but only glanced at the song's lyrics. I am sorry you didn't get a mention, but I don't know if it was an intentional slight.

Look at it this way. The Previews for March are out, and Captain Marvel #7 is listed, while Marville is not. CM survived the event, and seems to have jumped in sales.

And remember, the best revenge is living well.

(who finally gets a reply from PAD himself on this board, and it's due to one of my "Trent Lott" style political comments. Oh the shame.)

Luigi Novi: Odd, then, that Joe didn't mind working with Peter on X-Factor. I remember hearing that Joe was fired from that book for being unable to complete each month's pages on more than one occassion, which necessitated back-ups by Peter and Chris Batista. Is the current nastiness related in any way to this?

Posted by: Howard Margolin at December 25, 2002 03:32 AM

From Newsarama comes this quote from their analysis of Diamond's Top 300 for January:

The U-Decide ranks (in quantity):

Captain Marvel #5: #51 (a seven-slot increase from last month)

Ultimate Adventures #4 (resolicited) #76 (a five slot drop from December): #76

Marville #5: #107 (a six slot increase from December).

I don't care how Joe and Bill want to look at it. There's no comparison any more. You won, Peter. Hands down.

Posted by: Luigi Novi at December 25, 2002 03:53 AM

I don't even see why Ultimate Adventures was considered "Joe's" book. He didn't write it or illustrate it, he just edited it. How can that fairly be seen as "his" entry in the experiment?

Posted by: Siegzon at December 26, 2002 11:36 AM

The best revenge is writing well.

It must be very weird to be on a creative high and then suffer these industry setbacks. Supergirl and CM have both been getting great praise on the boards. And both are much improved over work that was ALREADY really wonderful. (I really loved the culmination of the Lilith storyline) When you look back on this, you'll know you took the high road by trying your best, regardless of the vaguries of publishing. Please keep up the good work.

Great praise on message boards means nothing, according to Joe Q, because clearly people who post on message boards are an extremely vocal minority who have far too much time to waste on posting on messageboards.

Which is why Joe Q seems to post on messageboards a lot.

I think the "Marvel doesn't want good writers" comment is kind of silly. Captain America has a great writer, New X-Men has a good writer at the top of his game for the first time. Ultimate Spider-Man is the best written Spider-Man book in ages...

I don't want to get into why I think there is such heat between PAD and Marvel Management, but it's not that Marvel is wanting to push lousy writers. Their books are better written, overall, than they have been in years.

I think it's kinda silly too, BUT...I beg to differ about Morrison and New X-Men: under his writing, it's become a repulsive book with unlikable characters and no redeeming values. The same goes for Mark Millar on Ultimate X-Men and Ultimates. I wouldn't buy those even if they were the last thing on earth, PERIOD. Suffice it to say that they're no longer even suitable for children, those books.
