CLAVIN & HOBBES

But I Digress...
March 22, 1991

The joy of having the Interpid But I Digress Staff (known as the IBIDS) on hand is that when I come up with some sort of a wacked-out idea that can only work as a cartoon, I can call up someone like the ever-talented James Fry (who even now is working on the "Top Ten Rejected Dick Tracy Villains" column illustrations) and ask him to-- as they say in Blazing Saddles-- whip it out.

So here is a demented scenario that came to me the other day, visualized courtesy of Mr. Fry. Clip and save.

Clavin & Hobbes

Funny. I asked the guy sitting next to me what he thought of the cartoon.

Unfortunately, it was Scott McCloud, and he launched into a long monologue about the history of the medium.

Sigh.

All these long years and I still miss Calvin & Hobbes.

As Luigi said, "Sigh".

I remember this from when it first came out. I clipped it and it's been with me ever since. Thanks for reminding me of it!

Has anyone else ever read Bill Watterson's opinion on comics? He feels that the daily's (and Sunday's for that matter) format strip him of artistic opportunity and creative storytelling. However, he goes on to say that comic books are pretty stupid.

(I had his whole spiel in a "Calvin and Hobbes" collected book, but I have since deleted that particular from my collection.)

You know, when reading it in the trade paperback, I didn't get that joke. It was only when Cheers finally aired in France (last year!!! And that's no surprise, considering we discovered Star Trek with the first movie -and got the original series after Wrath of Khan) that I got it. I also came to a frightening realization: if I was a sitcom character, I'd be Cliff Clavin!!! Like him, I'm a postman, and like him, I can't keep myself from telling what I know to people who may not always be interested.

BTW, which sitcom character would you be, Peter? And all of you here?

The date (March 22, 1991) seems to be the same as was the date of "TRICKS OF THE TRADE”. Which one is correct?

Wow. I still have a xerox of this from when it was first published. Thanks for the major league flashback.
