SPYBOY 13.1

One of the more frequently asked questions I've gotten in recent years is, "Whatever happened to Spyboy #13?" since the series jumped from 12 to 14. The answer has shipped its first third as Spyboy 13.1, the MANGA Affair, hit the stores last week.

Anyone read it? What'd'ja think?

Well, this is my first Spyboy comic, and I wasn't prepared for the B&W format, but I really enjoyed it. Great art and great writing.

I've been reading Spyboy since the beginning and I really enjoyed it. I was sorry to see the series "lapse" into periodic one-shots. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. While color is preferable I understand why the b&w.

I loved the cameo by Ogami & Daigoro. Your idea or Pop's?

I definatly liked it. I had problems reading later issues of Spyboy 7-12 (?) mainly because of the art/coloring.

Peter made a comment that people get a comic book because of the character first, the artist second, and the writer last. During that time, I got Spyboy out of habit but it always fell to the bottom of my list of things to read because of the coloring and art made it difficult to just read. I like color, but I think Spyboy would have done a lot better as Black & White with Pop Martin.

Peter,

Loved it! Can't wait for more!

Just curious to know though (not sure if this has already been covered) was it always planned as a B&W comic, or was that a decision that was made later on?

I was as surprised as hell when my Comic Shop Guy handed me a new Spyboy comic. It's quite clear that I don't look ahead at what's coming out from Dark Horse, no? Anyway, I rather enjoyed the story, and the b&w didn't bother me any. Of course, anything the story and art lacked was made up for, same as always, the SDs at the end.

I'm not sure who came up with the ideas for them, but I've enjoyed them for the entire run of the series. Admittedly, I didn't like them as much in YJ/Spyboy, but I didn't want them all to be evil. You know how it is.

All I can say is it's about time. Making us wait god knows how many years for issue 13. At least we're getting 3 issues of it. ;)

It seems like a good story so far. Just hope we don't have to wait years before the second issue.

I'm usually not a fan of manga style art, but this stuff is really good. The art and the story fit together in a great way. I've followed Spyboy from the first issue. I do miss the color, though.

You won't believe this, but I think the black-and-white copy actually enhanced Pop's luscious artwork. Did I like it? Hey, anytime Spygirl is on hand...

Spyboy? Spyboy who?

>The answer has shipped its first

>third as Spyboy 13.1, the MANGA

>Affair, hit the stores last week.

What was the real reason why issue #13 was originally skipped over? PAD's intro doesn't really say so (or are we suppose to assume that this was planned from the beginning?).

I read it today at work. (Yep, I was real busy today,LOL)

I liked it, it was different. For the life of me I can't remember reading it was going to be in black and white. Not a big deal, but when I first opened the page, I was taken aback for a second.

Interesting beginning to the story, now I can't wait to see what's coming next.

I was very pleasantly surprised to see new Spyboy this week. When 13 was supposed to come out, my comic shop dropped the ball on me, and I ended up missing issue 14 as well, and not finding 15 until I was visiting in Boston. When I came back I nagged them to put Spyboy back in my file and on order. I work for them now, so I can pester them about stuff from the inside now.

The issue itself was a lot of fun, and I went back and reread issues 1-12 before reading 13.1, just because I'm a lame continuity freak. It was nice that there wasn't that much that you needed to refer back to those issues for. The B&W format was nice too, and Pop's art looked great. I think Spyboy tended to lag visually when he wasn't around (more because his style became expected when you read Spyboy, and when it wasn't there, things felt "off" because of it)

Eagerly awaiting more, and out hunting down a copy of #14...

I loved this issue.

Now, the only Spyboy I can't find is #2. I picked up #1 and #3-#9 for a dollar a pop at a local show. Been hooked since then. All the comic stores in my area are missing to. All the auctions and TPB will give me #2 and tons of stuff I already have.

I loved it. I'm glad norm got to stay on the book because i know he loves the characters. any word on the possible cartoon? will there be any more issues after the manga affair?!?

I didn't know you wrote SPYBOY!!-- the shop only got 5 copies and I put the last one back on the shelf...

I have to watch what I spend, and I (oh man, I hate myself now) saw the cover price was the same for the full color book I was deciding and...

I'm sure somebody else picked up 13.1. Looks like I'll be reordering thru the shop.

AGAIN.

$3 a lick *is* getting harder to plunk down everytime, though. Not enough $$$ to go around...for me at least.

SPYBOY 13.1 was my favorite read from the past week. Even before any exposition got covered, Spygirl's actions really set up the mood for the entire episode.

I actually enjoyed Mhan's pencils MORE minus the coloring, as it seemed more 'manga-esque'.

I read it. At first I was a little put off by it being in black and white, but I think it works. I like Spyboy, so of course I liked the story. I guess I just would've liked it more in color.

It was a great read.

I'm just sad that there won't be any ongoing series, because it seemed that you had storylines planned which cannot be told in One-Shots or Mini-series. Thanks for revisiting the characters!

Is there any anime or manga you like, Peter?

Loved the story, loved the art, was somewhat disappointed in the absence of color, which gave an otherwise top-notch book a real low-budget appearance

Posted by: Nekouken at May 1, 2003 11:46 PM

Pascal asked if there are any manga or anime you like, PAD, and I can't help but link you in my mind to Rumiko Takahashi. I hope you're familiar with her (though if you're not, I envy you all the fun you can have the first time you see Ranma 1/2 or Inu Yasha), and I assume you are, since you're in the comics industry.

Anyway, I would love to see you do something with one of her casts (preferably Ranma or Maison Ikkoku - I'm not as big a fan of Urusei Yatsura and Inu Yasha's not done), since the thing I've always enjoyed most about your writing is your use of characterization (My favorites being Aquaman #4 and your issue of Hulk that guest-starred John Byrne's She-Hulk). I think you could do some very good things with them.

It actually fit in kinda nicely, since the first issue of Spyboy I ever bought was #14. Of course I am curious to see exactly WHY Yukio doesn't remember this particular adventure. And I liked how "finding" the photo paralleled "finding" the lost issue. Was skipping the 13th issue planned all along, like skipping the 13th floor?

For those of you who are wondering: The black & white art is supposed to be black and white, like real, authentic Japanese manga.

I, for one, loved it. It's nice to see Pop really in his element.

I really enjoyed this issue, and look forward to reading the other two. It caught my eye at the shop, and I have always liked SpyBoy, even though I haven't been able to afford it regularly.
