THE NEW CAPTAIN MARVEL?

Issue #16 of "CAPTAIN MARVEL" will introduce Phyla...Captain Marvel's heretofore unknown sister (except when he sees her he instantly recognizes her, which is weird even for this book). Issue #17 will have their first major confrontation, leading into the storyline's explosive conclusion with #18 in which we explain a whole buncha stuff and maybe the Kree, Skrull, Shi'ar team up to destroy Marv once and for all.

And no, her nickname won't be "Mary"...although Rick Jones does make reference to the "Mary Mar-Vell Marching Society."

Are you serious?!?!

If this is true, I'm surprised you're dropping these spoilers so early--the arc doesn't start for another 2 months.

"Phyla"?? As in "phylum" and "genus"? *groan* Nice one PAD.

So...Genis has a sister. The question is, who is the father?? Is it Mar-Vell again, using more of his DNA samples?

Or have Elysius and Eros getting busy?

I have to admit I'm a little skeptical of the idea of introducing an unknown sister, but I trust you PAD. I'm sure it'll be great. I'll just have to wait and see how you manage to pull this off!

Hmmm....I've been expecting Lucy Harper to become Rick's new love interest, but maybe Rick and Phyla will hook up??

Anyway, definately looking forward to the next CM issue!!!

This title continues to surprise me. While some of "Coven" didn't thrill me, that lull set me up for the greatness of the conclusion and the last issue as well.

Although people keep trying to make an allegory out of the last issue, as if it's something to do with Bush and Co.

I don't see it. I just liked the book alot.

Sounds interesting to me. I like your work on Capt. Marvel so I'm looking forward to this one.

Not so weird he'd recognize his sister on the spot.

Given everything else "Cosmic Awareness" has caused, instant recongition of people he's never met is MILD.

Off-topic, I know, but I just finished "Tong Lashing" and I'd like to congratulate you for this GREAT novel and for the whole trilogy. So when can we expect parts 4, 5 and 6??

SOME SPOILER THOUGHTS:

You MUST have plans for the next novel. The last page - especially those "hints" - seem to be your back-up plan. The mother of Apropos' son has to be Entipy because of the tragic involved and the parallels to the king Arthur saga. Then again, it could be Sharee or even Astel. So when do we learn more about the real muderer of Apropos' mother?

Well, as a matter of fact, the latest edition of TV guide just announced that Angel will find his heretofore unmentioned twin sister, Demonica, who he's never met, but recognizes immediately...

who's the artist tapped to work on those issues? (i still very much miss cross). i thought the work by michael ryan was pretty good. much better than the others penciling this book lately. it'd be nice to see some top notch work to match the scripts. i'm really looking forward to the turtles comic come issue five. can't wait to see how your own spin on the tenacious terrapins is gonna go. o yeah, i know this is late but i thought of a letters page title for the book: "The Terra-PEN is Mightier than the Sword". okay, so maybe it's corny but i got a eureka rush when i thought of it so i figured i'd share...

Remember the beginning of "Woad to Wuin", when he's wearing the wing, errr, ring? It could very well be one of the women from there. Granted, it would work better dramatically if the child was Sharee's or Entipy's, but too many people would be expecting that, and you know how PAD likes to work against people's expectations.

[who's the artist tapped to work on those issues?]

Someone named Paul Azaceta.

I am completely unfamiliar with him work, and have been unable to find any examples of it anywhere on line.

Anyway, he starts on CM with issue #15.

"Phyla"? Sure her name isn't Dawn?

;)

Posted by: Peter David at September 8, 2003 11:36 AM

Right. Right. It's just like "Buffy" in that (a) Buffy was instantly aware that Dawn had no business being there and (b) immediately tried to kill her, whereupon (c)Dawn promptly fought back with powers that outmatched Buffy's.

Oops. Wait. That didn't happen. Except that *is* what happens in "Captain Marvel."

Oh, and all the folks who said that "Fallen Angel" was just like BtVS, now that the book is actually out...care to keep making that claim?

Actually, this brings to mind the one thing that has always bugged me about this incarnation of Captain Marvel - how Genis is the "son" of the original, not the son of the original.

That whole thing about using the DNA and Titan science and dilithium crystals and the flux capacitor, blah, blah, blah... The character would resonate so much more for me if he was just Mar-Vell's son. It just seemed so contrived and phony. "Oh, of course, it was done through psuper-pseudo science. They didn't have sex together. They weren't *married*!"

I had the same issues with the most recent versions of Supergirl and Superboy. I actually agree with the decision to make Superman the last son of Krypton, which means the *last*, no if, ands, monkeys, cats, or bottle full of Sea Monkey people. But then, what makes Supergirl "Supergirl" and not "UltraGirl" or "Powerful Lass"? What is the connection that allows her to be part of that "family"? (And yes, I know all about the alternate world with the good Luthor and the Matrix and Mae, etc. But just for fun, sometime, sit down and try to explain to your six-year-old nephew who Superboy or Supergirl is and watch their little heads spin...)

I know that these are circumstances that PAD inherited and I love both books, Supergirl and Captain Marvel. I just wish the companies could have kept it simpler.

PS - The other character who is a victim of this is Venom. I hear people say all the time that Venom should be the villain in a Spider-Man movie and I always think, "Just setting it up, and that's with the subtraction of the Secret Wars elements, but the whole backstory of an alien being that bonds with Spider-Man which eventually leads to the personal hatred Venom feels for Spider-Man would take the whole movie."

Although I think I have an idea of how it could be done...

Heh heh...

Phyla... Genis... Where are his brothers Order, Class and Species?

I love biology humor.

Building on Pack's comments, imagine the storytelling that would have to be involved to introduce Cable in X3. Or even better, a three-way smack down between Cable, Nate Grey, and Stryfe.

Heh. Thinking about the various families Marvel, I started wondering if PAD could give us a guest shot by Carol "Warbird" Danvers in an upcoming issue of CM. I'd love to see his take on the divine former Ms. M. (Heck: anyone else think PAD could helm a revived solo book for Carol?)

[It just seemed so contrived and phony. "Oh, of course, it was done through psuper-pseudo science. They didn't have sex together. They weren't *married*!"]

I don't think the marriage issue had anything to do with it.

It would more likely be the fact that at the time Mar-Vell died he and Elysius had not had any children, and even *if* she had been pregnant at the time of his death, there is no way Genis would be old enough by now to become Captain Marvel.

The *had* to come up with some kinda of weird scenario to make it work.

And, regardless of his origins, he IS the son of Mar-Vell. Marv may have been dead at the time, but it is still his genes in Genis.

Honestly, I didn't even think of the Buffy/Dawn connection until someone else mentioned it.

I was just skeptical of the idea of introducing an unknown family member, but like I said, I trust you to pull it off well.

However, to go with the Buffy/Dawn analogy for a moment, I was skeptical about that too when I first learned about it. And I really liked how it turned out (aside from Dawn's tendency to whine through most of 6th season) so that eases more of my concerns.

So, I can't wait to see what you've got in store for Phyla!

I'm sorry, but I don't get this comment.

We can do this sort of thing NOW; what's contrived about taken frozen sperm and in vitro fertilization???? Titan science just takes the risk out.... [Hell, Genis could have all sorts of siblings...]

The only contrived part is the rapid aging...

Newborn babies running websites? That explains half the pages out there.

Horny 17 year old boys running them explains the other half.
